Problems with storing songs on the RNS510
« on: 10 November 2009, 19:07 »
I finally took the plunge at the weekend and got an RNS510 fitted which I have to say is an ace piece of kit. With one exception.
I tend to use my Ipod Nano with the Golf but since it's only a 4Gb model it's now full. So I thought instead of buying a new Ipod I could store a gazillion songs on the hard disc of the 510.
I tried loading a load over the weekend but the 510 doesn't recognise the vast majority of songs I put on the SD card and try to store in its memory. The manual talks about the 510 not accepting songs that are right protected or something but I'm loading songs from my own original CDs onto Windows Media Player so surely they can't all be right protected.
Am I missing something here?

Ive read somewhere that certains versions of the RNS510 Frimware doesnt support WMA ( apparently no WMA codecs).
SO, are you ripping to WMA or MP3 ?

Just use CDex to convert to MP3

Converting to MP3 does work and I can now save these to the 510. Thanks for that.

How do I now enter artist and album info onto the MP3 file as the conversion process only saves the song title. This is then all that shows on the 510 display. Sorry if that's a thick question.

Is storing songs on the HDD as slow (it maybe copies one song every 5 seconds or so) for everybody?  Spent ages converting to MP3 but can't face sitting in the car long enough to copy everything (copying a 2GB SD Card took 20-30 minutes)!  Seems a waste of time to me given the convenience of SD/USB/iPod.

a mate has an Evo X and with his HDD based stereo it has a feature to rip songs onto the HDD as you play them off the CD.  pretty cool, can the RNS510 do something similar?

Mk6 Golf GTI 5dr, DBP, Monza Shadow, Xenons, ACC, RCD510, Park Assist, Camera, Lux pack.... and now bluetooth.... and now DSG!

You should be able to fill in the details by clicking on the second icon from the bottom (Get Album Information from Remote CDDB)

Failing that you could always use MP3Tag

http://www.mp3tag.de/en/

And MP3Gain to normalise all tracks

http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/

Pretty sure not (had a quick browse of the manual).  Would be pretty cool though and a bit less nerdy than sitting in the car copying from SD...I saw a Sony stereo that does the same - I think they preload the Gracenote/CDDB/Tracknames onto the HDD.
