Auto Wipers info plz...

Right i've done a search and not much came up for the info i'm looking for.

Also i'd like to apologise as I don;t have a handbook to refer to otherwise I would've looked this up on there first.

Can someone tell me how to switch the auto wipers off as they are really daft. What I mean by this is that they don't come on when they should properly. The sensors must be sh!te as when it sprinkles it may just come on and sometimes like the other day it was chucking it an they cam on after so long, like when i'm just getting to the stage where I can;t see anymore.

So can someone tell me how to switch them off or have I got a problem???

Also how do the sensors work and where are they???

sensor is loacted behind the bracket for the rear view mirror

not sure how they operate otherwise

what you could do is to swap the relay controlling them over with a standard one

Cheers Rhyso, i'd rather keep it on he car as it is as it's a selling point, but would rather switch it off.

There must be a way to switch it off as i've still got the wiper speed selector option, surely with that being there I must be able to somehow revert back to manual speed operation if you get what I mean.

If you have the car with you now it might be worth trying. On the MK5 the auto wipers are set to auto with one click up and off with it clicked down as low as it goes. To turn them on you click it up twice (passing the auto setting) and thats low speed, then up another for medium etc etc.

No idea if this is the case with the MK4 but they cant be far off.

I don't leave it on one notch up, but when I do want it to be intermittent I put it on one notch and the auto sh!te just kicks in

Basically I want to be able to, when I put it on one notch be able to controld the speed of the wiper myself and not have the auto wipers on.
Someone told me to switch them on in the mk4 you flick the speed switch all the way up and then all the way down.
That turned them on but now I can;t find anyone that can tell me how to turn them off I can;t remeber who told me how to switch them on either I think it was a bloke at work.

Ummm yeah hasn't really answered anything. Does leaving it all the way at the bottom leave it off? Does moving it up a few notches force the whipers to wipe (regardless of if its raining).

Sorry Alan I just read your post again.
Right when the stalk is all the way down it stays off, which is normal and fine.
When on one notch it turns to auto wipers, but on a car without auto wipers at this stage you will have manual control over how fast you want the wipers to go.
Then on the next notch it is like constant speed.
And the next notch is full speed.

So what I wanted to revert to is the first notch to be manual again like it was when I first bought it so I can manually control the  speed and not let the auto wipers play games with me.

So the way you turn them on in the mk5 seems different to the way their turned on in the mk4, how do you switch yours off on the mk5? As this is what I want to really do.

You should have a notch on the wiper stalk at the top like in this picture:



When you have it on the non auto option the more to the left you have it moved the fewer frequent the wipes, the more to the right, the more frequent. This is indicated by the white stripe getting larger to indicate more frequent wipes.

Yeah that's hoe mine is mate, but when I have it on 1 notch and say for instance I had the little wiper speed all he way to the right for more frequent wipes it doesn't do that at the moment, it still acts like auto wipes so it may wipe once now then again in 10 minutes even though I have it on the far right at the highest speed towards the right on the little speed controller.

Normally on a car without auto wipers the driver controls the speed when it's on one notch but I need to turn my auto wipers off so i can do it manually again.

You get what I mean?

Having it up 1 notch is putting it in auto, have it up 2 notches to set it to manual. Does that work?
