I just made this up but upon reflection, i cant see any reason why it wouldnt. You may need a pretty big hammer though

Axles are designed to be straight to retain their strength. If they are warped at all, the linear strength will be compromised. I guess they can be straightened, but unless you are sure you can get it perfect, leave it to a pro', or swap it out.
Also, do you really want to fit new bushes into a damaged component?

I just made this up

And for that reason you should remain quiet.

As said Axles are linearily strong. Much the same as Carbon Fibre is on Racing cars. Taking a hammer to it is just making the situation worse, as you will begin to lose strength in the material even more. I.E. when you bend a paper clip back and forth, it will eventually snap.

Get a replacement.

the rear axles are designed to have a little give in them, mine bends slightly when I jack it up, are you sure it wasn't just bending because you had the jack in the middle.

I took mine off the other week, and even though it looks like 1 solid piece, it does actually have some bend and elasticity to it....
