Dual tone horn(s)
« on: 30 October 2009, 08:44 »
Mk2 8v 1991 spec.
there are two horns on this model - one behind the grill and the other mounted (strangely) behind the bumper on the near side.

The horn behind the grill works but the other has the wires/plug disconnected. When I connect the plug and then try to operate the horn, the fuse blows in the unit under the dash.

Have checked the wiring and found no obvious breaks.

Anyone any thoughts?
Thanks.
M.

If the fuse only blows when you connect the horn then she short is probably in the horn itself.

shouldnt be behind the bumper, it should be behind the passenger wing.
to confirm if it the horn plug it in using the other horn wires, if problem persists you know its the horn, if not you know its the wiring to the 2nd horn.

^^^^^^^^ Like he said.

To test it, you can run some temporary wires from the wiring to the horn behind the grille, down to the second horn.

If you do need to get a new horn, they do come up occasionally on ebay, but most other horns of that type will fit. I'm sure your local breakers will sell you a pair for not many coins.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

You are correct.... the horn is behind the n/s front wing.... daft place to locate it in such an exposed place.
Good tip on bridging the working one to the other. Will give that a go. Meantime... another search on Ebay!!!
