Is anyone ever likely to see the legendary 38 to 39 mpg on a brim-to-brim measurement, excluding driving the length of the M6 at 50 mph?

In short - No....

I reckon a normal driver should knock off 5-6 MPG off the official figure.... Maybe that's just me, but my last two cars I'm about 5.5 MPG away overall from the quoted 'combined' figure.

Quoted figures are an ideal standard, which is nigh on impossible to achieve in everyday conditions.
MKV GTI | Reflex Silver | 5-dr | Anthracite 17" | Manual | Highline MFD | Cruise | Revision 'D' DV | Dirty Pipes |

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

I have to say this - do you guys drive with handbrake on?????

38-39 is not really a problem in everyday driving BUT there are so many factors influencing the cons that is probably pointless to compare.
Just to mention a few:
driving style (acceleration, costdown, gear selection, idling), weight of the car, tyre pressure, outside temp, AC usage, heated seats, number of people in the car, oil you use, fuel quality...

I do these figures for living and I can tell you there is a reason why everyone wants to keep them (and related CO2 figures) as low as possible - from marketing to road tax to cong charges.

Just because you you can't drive it this way / don't want to doesn't mean it's impossible.

P.S. I see the future and in a new topic a couple of months "Why are my tyres bold after just 5000 miles?????"  "can they last 10000???"
Golf GTI VI DSG - died on the road, resurrected, came back as zombi, sold
R - rising blue, 5-door, DSG, ACC, something something...

Search 'tyres' or 'new tyres' in MKV section, if you want a laugh.

Then surely you of all people should be able to see through marketing departments' BS...?

To some extent :)
In the end it's good news for everyone as fuel con and CO2 is related (it's the same test) and the lower CO2 the lower the road tax we all pay every year and in some countries the difference between 170g and 190g is really big (+1000 euro to initial price of the car ) In mpg terms for petrol that would be something like 38 vs 34 so very close.

Even if these figures are a little too optimistic we are all better off then if they were realistic with let's say 25 mpg and 250g CO2....

Someone else mentioned heated seats in another thread too, but I thought the seats were heated by your battery ?

don't forget its your engine which charges your battery so if your battery is drawing more current then it will take more energy to recharge  :nerd:

I would have thought that heated seats would make sod all difference really  :undecided:

Even the A/C in my car hardly makes a dent in the fuel consumption  :undecided:

Newbie here; having owned the GTI bad boy for a month and not having to run it in (ex-demo, with 2,000 miles on the clock), I'm now averaging 40mpg on a 110 mile round-trip to work. My journey is a mixture of A roads, the M1, and around 7 miles of urban driving. Doing mainly 70mph and shifting gears in a way a gran would drive her Micra/Yaris. Also, as tight as I can be, I turn off the heating/air con. I've noticed the car can be extremely fuel-efficient when driven this way. I remember one trip I had 43-44mpg recorded

Of course, it dips when the boy racer persona takes over! If fuel prices were between 92p and 96p per litre just as it was 3-4 years ago I will be reducing my fuel costs even more. Greedy b-a-stard govt!

Top man! Though switching off the AC is a little bit too much even for me
I'll trade 1mpg for a cool breeze :)
