i got sh1te consumption even in the breaking in period kev so don't worry. my dealer said it would get better over time. i'm now averaging 30 and i've done 1800 miles. obviously i'm now driving the car hard between the gears (particuarly on the way home when n0bs like i had tonight try to race me - bore off mondeo - cya!) so if i didn't i would be averaging better than 30. so don't worry mate, i had exactly the same issue!
I'd still be interested to know how the improvement in fuel consumption after the running-in period actually happens. I haven't noticed anything like that happening in any of the cars I've had from new previously. Is it related to the turbo?
My first tankful came out at 29.4 mpg, which included the legendary scorch up the Lang Whang on the way home from the dealer (I know, bad person....)
My third has notched up 31.8 mpg, not doing anything too naughty apart from the odd bit of overtaking, and including a run up to Aberdeen and back.
I'm hoping for better than that under normal driving conditions, which for me is mostly extra-urban, journeys of about 12 miles at a time. Am I expecting too much?
I appreciate that driving, er, enthusiastically, will cause consumption to soar. However, one of the reasons I chose the Golf was because it seemed to offer decent economy in normal, non-boy-racer mode. Is anyone ever likely to see the legendary 38 to 39 mpg on a brim-to-brim measurement, excluding driving the length of the M6 at 50 mph?
Rolfe.
