I think this thread and the previous one, people are picking it up all wrong. Personally I have not had a problem with the amount of petrol its using, I only had a problem with the amount I was using Vs the figures quoted from VW. I was wasting something like 60% fuel compared to what VW was saying. Of course now the fact that the engine being so new and the run-in being important for the first few thousand miles has been explained i think this has already been answered for me personally. Regardless if comsumption is my bag or not. When VW tells me I get 48mpg extra urban and I get 23 then that needs to be questioned. I'd happily accept even as much as those figures being 20% out, but 55% out was alarming at first. It doesnt mean I want a diesel or I dont know what a GTI is all about, I just wanted it explained.

Have to check what the 2nd computer is saying about overall figures in the 1400+ I've done in it...but it's pretty bad round town but really happy with it out on the road when not giving it the beans all the time (you know just normal driving)...25 mile run home from picking it up from the garage (that were respraying the new bumper to get a better colour match than the stealer managed) and I got 39mpg mostly A-road 50-75mph...

I appreciate you taking the time to reply mate, top man. Made me feel ten times better now

p.s. What is it with Mondeo drivers anyway ? I've had em in the past trying to be something they are not.

no probs dude.

i know, i don't know why he bothered cause all he did was mug himself off.  i seem to attract losers trying to race me.  a golf 2.0 tdi tried it on the way back today, he had to yield in the end.  then i overtook a 120d saloon (what a piece of sh1t) later on and he took offence to this - he couldn't keep up though

  Brilliant.

I had an Alfa Romeo behind me, right close so he was. Knew I couldnt do anything (bloody run-in period sucks) had to bite the bullet and let him past, he then slowed down expecing me to boot it, but I didnt. Felt a right tw@t, but my time will come

damn that running in period.  i had a couple of instances when i had to move over for the 1st 1000 miles.  so irritating.  you know they are thinking 'p7ssy' or 'ha ha i've beaten a new GTI'.  not anymore!  i refuse to let a car lesser than mine bully me off the road.  childish i know but these n0bs need pulling down a peg or two.  this one today in the golf tdi should know better being a golf driver. so why bother even trying - just get out of my way and chug along in your diesel!!  and he was a young lad so when he sees me fly past in my geeky glasses it must really p1ss him off   :nerd:

Hmmm the road is not for you to show off. Think safety and please realise that immaturity thoughts like boy racer thots whilst driving can cause accidents... and while I find ppl b!tching about consumption and all, an interesting read then I realised no wonder they do not get their required mpgs... before they are driving like c0cks... trying to show off...

ha ha ha I find the irony, very funny indeed

i don't drive like a c0ck matey.  and i don't show off.  but if some (unt comes up my ar7e (such as this evening, bird in a 118d driving dangerously as she was right up my ringpiece) - shame she can't accelerate in that black cab as fast as i can then i'll show them up.  i'm not weaving in and out of traffic or driving dangerously.  and i haven't b1tched about consumption or getting required mpgs - we were discussing mpg - i personally don't give a sh1t about consumption as i'll still have to fill up once a week anyway.  and if i did give a sh1t i'd go buy a diesel bore off car.

i got sh1te consumption even in the breaking in period kev so don't worry.  my dealer said it would get better over time.  i'm now averaging 30 and i've done 1800 miles.  obviously i'm now driving the car hard between the gears (particuarly on the way home when n0bs like i had tonight try to race me - bore off mondeo - cya!) so if i didn't i would be averaging better than 30.  so don't worry mate, i had exactly the same issue!

I'd still be interested to know how the improvement in fuel consumption after the running-in period actually happens.  I haven't noticed anything like that happening in any of the cars I've had from new previously.  Is it related to the turbo?

My first tankful came out at 29.4 mpg, which included the legendary scorch up the Lang Whang on the way home from the dealer (I know, bad person....)

My third has notched up 31.8 mpg, not doing anything too naughty apart from the odd bit of overtaking, and including a run up to Aberdeen and back.

I'm hoping for better than that under normal driving conditions, which for me is mostly extra-urban, journeys of about 12 miles at a time.  Am I expecting too much?

I appreciate that driving, er, enthusiastically, will cause consumption to soar.  However, one of the reasons I chose the Golf was because it seemed to offer decent economy in normal, non-boy-racer mode.    Is anyone ever likely to see the legendary 38 to 39 mpg on a brim-to-brim measurement, excluding driving the length of the M6 at 50 mph?

Rolfe.
