Consumption
« on: 19 October 2009, 18:43 »
as kev's other thread got locked cause of ar7eholes, i've started a new one.  my p0xy internet is down at work so can't give my two penneth earlier.  i got sh1te consumption even in the breaking in period kev so don't worry.  my dealer said it would get better over time.  i'm now averaging 30 and i've done 1800 miles.  obviously i'm now driving the car hard between the gears (particuarly on the way home when n0bs like i had tonight try to race me - bore off mondeo - cya!) so if i didn't i would be averaging better than 30.  so don't worry mate, i had exactly the same issue!

After about 3 months of owning my car I`m at about 1800 miles now,i`m getting about 30 mpg which isn`t bad because i drive it like a Gti should be driven, hard and fast
Golfgti build quality is average at best.

I appreciate you taking the time to reply mate, top man. Made me feel ten times better now

p.s. What is it with Mondeo drivers anyway ? I've had em in the past trying to be something they are not.

I'd heard this in some other posts (about it getting better as it's run in), which surprised me as the other three cars I've had from new started as they meant to go on.  The Peugeot was persistently doing 28mpg brim to brim - worse in winter with short journeys.  It only got a lot better in its last three years when I moved house and had a much more economical drive to work, but I suppose then I was getting maybe 33mpg.

It's all very well saying, it's a GTi, but its relatively good fuel consumption was one of the things that attracted me to it.  I'd been looking at the Focus ST, which is rated at 30mpg, and 38 or 39mpg for the Golf definitely caught my eye. I've not calculated my consumption yet, but I've not been totally overwhelmed by the readouts.  Even coasting downhill from Kirk o' Shotts to Baillieston in traffic doing about 50mph barely got me 41mpg

So is this "it gets better with time" a feature of the turbo, or what?  I have to say I was hoping for the high 30s in extra-urban, at least.

BTW, Snoopy (re other thread), the Peugeot's tank was nominally 60 litres I think, but I usually got more than that in it.  If I went on till it was running on fumes, I occasionally got 65 litres in it.  The look on petrol station attendants' faces had to be seen to be believed.

By the way, has anyone figured out how far you can go after the MFD tells you you've got no miles left?

I've got a 5 litre can in the boot.  I might check it out some day.  Always good to know where you stand!

I note the end of the tank seems to disappear awful fast.  One minute you've got 20 miles, next minute it's find a petrol station like NOW!

I have about 1300 miles on mine and averaged 33mpg so far, it doesn't get used during the week so just (relatively) long journeys at the weekend - and not granny like driving either. I've had the MFD step right down (in 5 mile decrements) to 5 miles remaining from 25 when the refuel light comes on and the 'fasten your seatbelt' style warning sound. I think I've seen a constant 41mpg at 80mph in top gear on a relatively flat piece of motorway but the slightest incline sees it plummeting. Definitely got better with more miles.

Does petrol brand make a difference?, only ever used optimax...

We've said it before, if consumption is your bag, don't get a GTi. Anything north of 30 MPG and a 320 range for a tank, is good, IMHO.

Plus the quoted figures are a lot of t0sh; I reckon a normal driver should knock off 5-6 MPG off the official figure.... Maybe that's just me, but my last two cars I'm about 5.5 MPG away overall from the quoted 'combined' figure.

I drive it like a Gti should be driven, hard and fast

+1. Please buy a TSi or a soot-slinger if you want to pour over MPG figures

As Kev says, a bit of lively debate is always nice...  :lipsrsealed:
MKV GTI | Reflex Silver | 5-dr | Anthracite 17" | Manual | Highline MFD | Cruise | Revision 'D' DV | Dirty Pipes |

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?
