Quick question - fuel pump at fault?

Having a couple of issues with my 8v digi today - was driving along and noticed an odd whirr coming from the rear end of the car at idle in traffic. Noise got louder and louder until the car cut out. Car starts and drives fine but noise comes and goes when stationary at different audible levels.

Is this likely to be the fuel pump? If so I've read there are 2 - how do I test which one is at fault? I've had a gander through the search engine but if anyone could shed anymore light on the subject I'd appreciate it.

Must be the fuel pump. Had this noise myself a couple of times today so will be following this thread interestedly. I'm sure this has been covered before though, will have a quick look.

If the whining got louder - I would have thought the lift pump was failing to supply fuel and starved the main pump.

When was the last time you changed your fuel filter?

Cheers for replies - new in tank pump ordered. No idea on the filter, should probably change that too.

Wait - you've ordered it without testing? I'm all for internet diagnosis, but make sure you actually test it before replacement!

Read on somewhere that vw use a lifetime filter.

Fuel pump whining, then cutting out? Time for a new injection pump. The one under the car, next to the filter.
Oh, and it's the most expensive one too....  :sad:

For the sake of a few pounds, i'd change the filter.

Yeah I've tested it following the advice from the link above. Not fully convinced but for the sake of 20 odd quid from the local GSF it's cheaper to change this first than the main pump. And yeah new fuel filter to go on too.

Thanks for all advice, much appreciated. Will report back soon with any findings.

Make sure you also buy the hose that connects to the main pump as usually rusted solid and snaps upon removal..
