Today, I too tried these bolts for removing the driveshaft to get to the lower ball joint.

Yesterday I bought some Torx bits for the job.  I tried today but they just kept slipping.

I then had a second look and they are 12 pointed XZN bits.

Thankfully my flatmate has managed to get to the balljoint without touching the bolts.

I hate the amount of female allen/torx/xzn bolts on the Golf.

Not just on a Golf mate! Ever looked at an Astra diesel head bolts? Weird!

Mikester get the right tools mate it will save you a lot of heartache in the end. And less busted knuckles!  :grin:
Check out a local motorfactors as you will be surprised what special tools they keep.

So today i went to machine mart, and bought some propper tools, full 40peice spline, hex and torx bits.

And they all cracked off like a beauty.

Undone the rear engine mounts and dragged all of the running gear away.

Now im left with the engine, ready to change the chains, clutch, service paint and put in.

Good good, but

PLEASE PLEASE be careful with the chains, I've done some (with help) on a Corsa and they are different to a belt. Don't want that getting smashed up.

Oh, and don't try doing any engine lifting by hand. :grin:

Good good. I know you have a crane, but I've seen people do their backs in by trying to lift it that little but further. :wink:

I would never try and do anything that involves more effort than the minimal thats required. lol. Otherwise known as lazy.

Cant wait to rip the 8v out and spray the bay!

Me being one. You wouldn't think a mini engine and subframe is heavy.....god I was wrong.
