I've been driving Golfs for years, Mk2, Mk3 and Mk5, not all GTIs though, and I have to admit that I find it hard to distinguish a normal Mk6 and Mk5 from a distance.  They kind of just seem the same.  I've yet to see a Mk6 GTI on the roads though.

VW have a winning formula with the Golf and they would be stupid to radically change it's appearance.  It wouldn't be a Golf otherwise.

You cant even notice 2 red stripes compared to one at the front, or two sperate exhausts compared to two together from a distance ? Sorry but you should get an eye test, and really shouldnt be driving.

I'm due an eye test actually!

Like I said, I've not seen a Mk6 Golf GTI in the flesh yet and like I said I find it hard to distinguish a normal Mk6 and Mk5.  Learn to read.

See those pics of a mk6 you've seen ? Honestly dude, and you can hold me to it, no really you can - those red stripes and those exhausts ? They are there on the real life car ! Honestly they are, I didnt believe it at first either, but when I saw it in the flesh I just couldnt believe it.

Wow, really?  I can't wait to see my first MK6 GTI on the roads!  It's gonna be so exciting!!!

Exciting is not the word, remember the rules though, if you dont know sh!t about the differences between a mk5 and a mk6, one stripe at the front its a mk5, 2 its a mk6. If it overtakes you, two pipes together its a mk5, two pipes seperated its a mk6. Then you can get all giddy and clap and sh!t, but only if your not driving and have parked.

Or a MK5 with v6 so that's not really a good indicator is it? ha ha ha ha. I normally find going on the reg plate as that tells you how old it is.

As has been pointed out though most joe bloggs public won't tell the difference as it's just a hatchback like they probably can't tell the difference between a MKI and MKII Focus. Not everyone is a car geek.

In all seriousness, the Golf GTI is the best car in it's class.  Be it the Mk5 or Mk6.  It is a brilliant allrounder.  You can have lots of fun in it and it is a great family car.  I will always give a little nod to drivers of all marks of Golf GTIs and I will never try to burn them off.  TDIs are a different matter though!

Agreed, I get quite a few waves from MK5s and below when out in the MK2. MK6 GTI drivers so far don't wave but I guess many haven't settled into GTI ownership enough to know that other GTI drivers will wave.

I do however like to "burn them off" as you put it, but only when safe to do so and like the look of surprise and respect on their face when I'm still next them by the next set of lights.

The Mk2 GTI was the one that I always wanted but being only a teenager at the time it was out of my reach.  My dad wasn't into cars that much so when we bought a Mk2 Golf, it was the Golf Driver

I inherited that off him and have driven lots of Golfs over the years.  All apart from the Mk4 and 6.

maybe to a tard the difference is not noticeable.  but to anyone with a brain its quite obvious.  in fact, i've noticed that people get out of my way on the roads a lot more in the mk 6 than they did in the mk 5 which is quite satisfying

140ish bhp 1.9 8v and stripped out. MK5/6's only start to pull away above 80mph until then it's even stevens unless they've had a remap.
