The MK6 has always been known as a re-jigged MK5.  VW said they'd changed every outer panel, and all of the interior - but essentially its based on the same car.  Originally a lot of magazines / websites were calling it a MK5.5 because they'd changed so little.
I think its a shame that they're looking to replace it in 2 years time since its such a nice car to drive and is much nicer looking than the pictures above!  It makes me a little anxious about buying a MK6 R knowing that in another 2-3 years there will be a MK7... but then I could be waiting forever if I want a car thats not going to be updated eventually!!

There's another word, essentially. So essentially as its based on the same car, the GTI is the same as, well, every other car on the planet, essentially its the same, you know, 4 wheels, a steering wheel etc.

GTI mk6, 3dr Manual (Yes Manual! If I wanted a Taxi I'd hail one, not spend £1500 on one), Candy White, Full Leather, Xenons, ACC, 18", RCD510 + Dynaudio, DAB Radio, Winter Pack, Luxury Pack, Fiscon Bluetooth Plus, Golf R LED's.

Fundamentally, it's essentially exactly the same. Except for the differences, of course.  :lipsrsealed:

Unless someone reverse engineers and finds out exactly how much is carried over from the MKV, we'll all be speculating here.

To me, a new nose and revised interior does not make 'a new car'. My interpretation of a 'new car' is from the ground up, new chassis, etc but ETTO. :afro:

I think this is what Nick is trying to diplomatically convey, much to the annoyance of the MKVI'ers.

MKV GTI | Reflex Silver | 5-dr | Anthracite 17" | Manual | Highline MFD | Cruise | Revision 'D' DV | Dirty Pipes |

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

To be fair the mk6 is just a mk5 with a face lift and a few tweeks, the mk5 is a great car so don`t really see any problem :undecided:
Golfgti build quality is average at best.

so they've changed most things but its the same car?  this reminds me of trigger from only fools and horses.  he has had the same broom for 20 years but has changed the brush 30 times.

its not the same car, period.  those who state it is either don't have one or haven't driven one.  i had my mk 5 gti for nearly 3 years and my mk 6 for a shade over 1000 miles now.  and its a totally different drive and looks different inside and the outside is different too.  i'd rather trust my opinion rather than some bald journo who has had the car for 2 days then writes how its the same car.

oh, and the definition of "the same" is:

Main Entry: 1same
Pronunciation: \ˈsām\
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English, from Old Norse samr; akin to Old High German sama same, Latin simulis like, simul together, at the same time, similis like, sem- one, Greek homos same, hama together, hen-, heis one
Date: 13th century
1 a : resembling in every relevant respect b : conforming in every respect —used with as
2 a : being one without addition, change, or discontinuance : identical b : being the one under discussion or already referred to
3 : corresponding so closely as to be indistinguishable
4 : equal in size, shape, value, or importance —usually used with the or a demonstrative (as that, those) in all senses

so its not really "the same" is it.  someone said 90% of people on here don't read what is written.  i would say 90% don't understand english.

You guys crack me up. I mean really you have no understanding of the automotive industry and how it works. I didn't say exactly the same as that would be silly. If you don't believe me fine, next time you're in the dealers ask one of the techs out back, he'll put you straight.

My family has been involved in the motor industry for over 50 years and I do know what I'm talking about, I'm certainly not a balding journo and I certainly am not just lifting my opinion from theirs. I am repeating the official VW information. If you want to disbelieve the company that actually made your car and fool yuourself you're driving a completely different car from a MK5 go ahead, it's no skin off my nose it just makes me laugh you get suckered in by the glossy brochure and sales patter of some spotty sales clerk.

Why does it bother you so much ? :undecided:

because its moronic to say its the same car!!  no reason other than that!  and these kind of comments always come from people who don't have one/haven't driven one.  its like saying a film is sh1t but not actually watching the film to make up your own opinion and just saying that cause they read it in the paper - its retarded.
