quick RNS510 question
« on: 05 October 2009, 22:23 »
Hi
I am just about to pounce on Ebay
But hoped anybody could quickly help me, I have read that sometimes the MFSW doesn't always click with the RNS display, and VAGCOM is needed.
A garage local to me has VAGCOM, will they know what to do to fix stuff?
And does the air con display show on the RNS , I guess it does as would the parking radar?

Thanks again

Nick

Do you not need to update the FW for the aircon to work?
Especially if its an older version?

Thats a good point. I naturally assumed he has the latest version. May want to check what version it is before you buy

Righto!
Well,I went for it, it is the version with the part number ending in B.
How the hell do I update firmware? I am sure I read it can fubar the unit, but that said I have no idea how to do it!
Do you think any garage that has VAGCOM will be able to do what I need?
Still waiting on the GPS aerial before I can perform the surgery, so it'll be the weekend I guess (I'll need an empty house as I tend to turn the air blue with stuff like this/ assembling flat pack etc!)
Sorry if am asking basic stuff, but I din't fare too well with searches.

Thanks again
Nick

I have the B version, I have also owned the A version. I think only version C will work with the Air Con display. I also have VagCom and know of no way of programming a A or B unit to show the Air Con. As stated you can indeed update the FW however I have researched this many times. It is exceptionally risky and can indeed 'brick' the unit.

My suggestion is that you leave the unit as it is and just VagCom it to work with your MFSW if its doesnt already do so when you connect it. The GPS antenna sits and works nicely on the small lip under the plastic air vent. That means it is completely out of sight and a great place to locate it if you havent yet done so.

I updated my FW - it took about 45 mins and was a fairly pain free experience!
I don't have a car yet, so I simply plugged it into a 12V 3amp supply, and popped in the update disk.  It asks you a few times if you want to proceed, and then you leave it to it.
Once its done, it reboots - and suddenly accepts 32gb memory cards

If you have a search on here you'll find a topic about upgrading the FW.  If not, I'll post you a link when I get home!

You can find the latest firmwares here: http://www.my-gti.com/1198/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-to-version-2660-2662-2664-2666-2668

You just need to download the 4 parts, then open it with winRAR so that it extracts them to 1 file.  Burn this file with Nero onto a decent brand of DVD (just to be safe!) - then plonk it in your RNS and wait 45 mins.
Easy peasy!!

Haha!
That last post mad me feel like my dad on a computer!
What on earth is Winrar?
I have found an official cd of the update on ebay for 30quid? i am keen to take the risk factor out of it a bit, or may as well have flushed the 500 down the lav!
My current FW is 800, HU was made June 2008, so it would be nice to get it all "new". How on earth do I get it powered up without it being in the car?
I am a layman at this stuff, didnt realise i was quite such a techo retard!
Cheers again

The ebay software at £30 will no doubt be the same as the one in the link!!!

Just remove your old head unit and plug this one in. You don't have to fit it properly as all you want to do is connect it to the power leads. Once the firmware has upgaraded, you can fit it correctly then.
