I disagree (of course )

You may well get (claimed) better performance, and almost instant acceleration, but in truth your buying a car because its great handling characteristics, and ability to do everything well... yet still be able to have a blast on the weekend or when the roads open up. Very much like the original gti!!! which did not come with dsg

For me the big let down with dsg was its inability to make its mind up... and here we are talking about in start stop traffic as opposed to when pushing on.

And just to add if you reverse into a tight spot or garage like i do every night, dont even consider it!!  :lipsrsealed:

I agree, it's not at its best in traffic (hesitation between 2nd & 3rd, 1st & 2nd...), but I do very little urban driving, so I don't mind really.

I've never understood this objection, I have no problems reversing or manoeuvering at very low speeds.

As I said, the DSG is not as good as people make out and personally I prefer a proper automatic with a torque converter. But VW don't offer this and as I'm basically a lazy arse, I don't want to change gear myself

My drive is on a very slight incline and has a slight lip as you enter the garage. tried to use the natural drive of the car to get over it but would have to brake immediately after.. this just confused the crap out of dsg which would just shift in and out of gear or whatever it does when its not moving.

the natural torque of the r32 made it such a breeze to drive, so couldnt understand why the dsg would mess it up and rev so high??

6th gear @ 15mph once drove all the way home in 6th just because i could

 Cant comment on the mk6 but its proven (by everyone from standard cars to highly modified ones) DSG is quicker. Speak to vtec abuser, jonny c etc etc who all agree DSG is a huge advantage and worth a lot of extra time on the 1/4!

On the road however the difference is neglagable, down shifts are quicker and reversing is easy. Ive maneuvered my car in various situations.

My local high street on the isle of wight (when i go back) is very steep! The DSG parks with ease!

I'm just back from my dealer where I had the DSG GTD out for about 3 hours, then a manual GTI out for about 45 mins (had no fuel!!)

I have to say I'm VERY surprised with the GTD in general.  I'm usually a diesel hater - but I was quite impressed with it.  It was smooth, quiet and quick.  Infact... (get ready for the unhappy GTI owners) I wouldn't say there was MUCH difference in power between the GTD and GTI.  The GTI was definately faster, but not by as much as I was expecting.  The GTD was torquier which proved useful on a couple of occassions when I had to overtake on country roads!

Anyway - DSG or Manual?  I think this has made my mind up that the DSG is a winner!  I drove it in auto mode for a while in traffic and general normal driving.  It was always in the right gear - although personally I wouldn't be doing 35mph in 6th gear... but I suppose this is how it saves fuel.  When putting the foot down is was very quick and responsive, and it was also good for down shifting with the paddles when coming into corners.  It very rarely went into 1st gear unless I was totally stopped - but I guess this is a diesel thing?!

Is it worth £1300?!  I can't really make my mind up about that!

It's definitely worth £1,300 for this technology - an absolute bargain to be honest. Personally I don't want it, even if it were standard and therefore free.

Personally the DSG technology is on another level but I just cant get enough of the mechanical sound that you get from changing gears,im making a bold statement here but IMHO I think you would get bored of it in the long run.
