DSG on GTD
« on: 01 October 2009, 19:21 »
I currently have a deposit down on a Golf R and Scirocco R.  I'm about 99.9% sure I'm going for the Golf now - but I'm still undecided about DSG or Manual.
I'm a previous Edition 30 owner, which was manual - but I always fancied DSG since everyone (most people!) rave about it.
I've had a brief test drive of a MK6 GTI with DSG, and an S3 & TTS both with 'S-Tronic' (same thing!).  In theory it feels great - but do I want it for the next 3 years?!

I decided to phone my dealer and ask if I could have a decent shot of a MK6 GTI with DSG for a day to see how I get on.  Unfortunately they only have the GTI in manual - and their DSG car just now is a GTD.  Has anyone driven a GTD?  I'm not entirely convinced a diesel car will give me the same 'test' of DSG that it would with a petrol?

I'm not going to ask for manual v DSG comments, as there are a million threads on that already!
I just want to know if a GTD will give me a decent test of DSG compared to petrol?!

I have tried the 6-speed DSG on several VWs, Audis, Seats and Skodas, both diesel and petrol. Specifically, I have driven the Golf GTD DSG and own the GTI DSG. The gearbox feels all but identical on every car it's fitted to, though programming changes slightly depending on the power and torque of the engine.

Contrary to what most people (especially journalists) say, the DSG 'box is not 'perfect', but it is very good and I would always opt for it over a manual. You only have 2 feet, so why would you want 3 pedals?

So that you can control the clutch . . . but as the OP said, lets not get drawn into ANOTHER DSG v Manual thread.

Before we ordered our GTI we test drove both a Sirocco and a Golf GTD. (We were not impressed) I would say that it is not a true comparision of a petrol version GTI as torques etc are completely different. We have ordered the DSG, having driven a petrol version. If you are interested in GTI DSG, please please test drive a petrol version before making your mind up.

I've driven three DSG Golfs now - a Mk5 GTI, R32 and the GTD. IMO DSG suited the more torquey engines in the R32 and GTD better than the GTI.

I have tried it when the MK6 GTI first came out - but it was a 20 minute run with the dealer in the car next to me!  It seemed very quick and responsive... but I'm more concerned what it will be like when the novelty wears off and I'm stuck with an automatic car for 3 years!
My heart is telling me to order it as it'll be great, but my head is telling me I'll get fed up of it after a few months!

Most of my driving is to and from work in traffic - stop / start / stop / start... so an automatic car would have its advantages!

if you spend any time in your commute stuck in traffic, and find it a pain then the DSG is a no brainer.

i can't wait
Just sold an S5 - previously mkV R32 DSG Metallic Grey with RNS 510 (thanks to MortyGT140)

I had a mk5 Gti 12 mnths manual,  a mk5 R32 for 2 years Dsg and now a mk6 gti and it had to be Dsg for me over manual
Best of both worlds stuck in traffic or feeling lazy stick it in D, want a spirited country road bash stick it in manual and play with the paddles or Sport mode
Would'nt be without it now, thats my opinion but where all different
Mk6 Gti Gone but not forgtten

Not GTD but had a GT/TDI/DSG loaner briefly - too jerky for me (clutch slip?).
Had a demo in a Scirocco 1.4 DSG and really liked it though (DSG that is)!  Presumably GTi somewhere in between?

I don't really understand why you think you will get fed up of not having to change gear yourself any more than you would tire of not having to wind the windows up and down. I would say it's quite the opposite: once you have used a DSG (or any other automatic), you will never want to go back to a manual.
