To get the large panel around the fuse box cover off, you need to reveal the screws at the top by removing the sort of long thin bulgy cover just below the steering column, i think this is the one in your description.

This thing is in two parts and both just clip off.  Try inserting a long flat head screwdriver behind them and carefully prising them away.  They are not that hard to get out so you shouldn't need too much force.  Try pulling at different angles if they won't come off.  There are two or three screws for the main panel behing these two covers.

I think overall there are 5 or 6 screws but the rest are not hidden.

Once you remove the big panel the relays will be obvious.

As for removing the relays i think you just pull them straight out.

Good luck

(by the way, if the worst happens and you do break a cover, it doesn't matter, it has no effect on driving the car, it's only a cosmetic cover)

Dont really need to remove anything else other than the fuse box cover. I did then found i didnt need too.

I know its hard to see each relay but if ya look at the Haynes manual it shows ya where the relays are and you can just count from one side and pull out the right one.
Yes they just pull out, shouldnt be a problem for a lady that makes cakes, u shld have long strong fingers, probably find it easier than i did. Just give them a little wiggle side to side, not much, and they should pull out easy. If not get some long nosed pliers but dont grip too hard.

A cake for a look at a manual - fair swop!

Just had a look at mine again, very difficult to see, unless ya get down on hands and knees outside the car, (with door open of course!) U can just see em. But i think by touch is better - always!

Haynes Manuals are cack.  According to one i had removing a front seat was of the same difficulty the replacing the head gasket.  Granted it was a renault and i did have to remove the exhaust centre section and heat shield to remove a seat.

Also the mk3 golf haynes manual doesn't cover the vr6 engine :'(

I wonder if haynes do cake manuals. :D

Granted i agree - haynes manuals are crap. Undo this and remove! Utter Boll*cks!

But in this case it gives a diagram of the relay board and its easy to read and work out which relay is which.
