hmm how to describe without a pic
this is for a mk2.....
the little ball on the relay shaft sits in a little cup on another rod - this translates the back n forth montion of the gearstick - at the end of this rod is the little clamp
on a mk1 you want to adjust the shift rod clamp as shown in this pic

on a mk2 again its the shift rod clamp you adjust

can be done with a good stretch with the bonnet open as long as the manifold aint hot.
although its easier to gain access from underneath

easy enough job to sort, you just need somebody to hold the gear stick, or else rack up some device to hold it in neutral
VAG have a little tool which clamps on the little block on the side of the gearstick and holds it all in place. i.e makes it a one man job

I used my tool box on top of the stick to change the ball and cup

Sure was took me a few attemps tho, I was out and about last night and could not find reverse
so 1st thing today at 7.30 one more ajustment and she was all beautiful
