Track car help?
« on: 20 September 2009, 21:42 »
Hi people im new to this forum i currently have a 106 rallye track car that i have owned for a few years im now looking to move on!
I was thinking about a mk1 or mk2 with a 20vt lump id be doing the conversion myself and if so is it a hard one to do is there much welding required im a mechanic anyways so nothing should be too bad but id like some advice from someone who has done one! On the other hand i was thinking about going for a mk4 20vt but im a bit worried about the weight as im used to a 850 kg car with 165bhp so i think id need at least 250bhp stripped out mk4 golf to make it faster than my rallye! Has ayone got a mk4 they use for track that could shed some light on it for me!
Sorry about waffling on but i need to know this is the right kinda idea for me
any replys/advice will be great many thanks Neil

What sort of budget you got? You may find you can pick up a pre converted MKII that you can then strip out and track.

Welcome aboard by the way :-)

Welcome along

As you're a mechanic you probably won't find it too difficult and could probably save some dosh by  voiding the pre-made 'plug and pray' kits.

Have a looksie in the dub rides threads & Golf1&2 project sections

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

Bang on your budget and you could sell some of the spangly crap and get some ££££'s back.

Engine mounts are pretty much the same I think, physically getting them is easy as most VW engines use the same basic block design. It's just the wiring and zorst that are a bit fiddly. Gearbox wise I believe you need to change a MKII to to hydro clutch from cable and the gear linkage from rod to cable but you just use off the shelf bits, I believe it's not that hard.

thats sounds more like it id have complete leon, a3 , golf as a donor car like a salvage one that i can scrap after robbing all the bits off !

i have converted my rallye form 8to16v and put throttle bodies on it but i have allways loved mk2s

dont spose you would roughly know the weight of a mk2 ?

cheers Neil

Off hand no. Have a look in the dub rides part of the forum for Diamond Hell's Not So Cheap Track Car thread and Veedubgti26v's 85 GTI thread as they have both weighed theirs after stripping them out. I am yet to get mine on a weigh bridge.
