Not your usual pick up
« on: 13 September 2009, 23:11 »

Ok finally got my car, but had a funny old experience...

Car was due last Friday and the dealer and I were swapping e-mails re: delivery dates, paperwork etc.  Then he calls me Thursday late afternoon and says he's made the biggest c0ck up of his 25 yr career in VW... he's ordered a DSG instead of a manual!

Re-ordering a manual car would mean delivery postponed till Nov/ Dec and there are no other similar cars to the spec I want in the system.

Anyway come 2pm on Friday I decide to accept his best best offer of giving me the DSG for half price, plus chuck in the supaguard, some clean products, ipod cable and a full tank of fuel.  Interesting thing is that on PCP, the monthly payments are actually lower with the DSG due to better residuals.  (the balloon at the end does go up by 600 quid, but hey ho, that's 3 years away)

Having driven it around a bit, it is a lot better than a regular auto, but it isn't quite the perfect thing some make it out to be.  Will post more on the DSG vs manual thread about my experiences thus far.

Other first impressions are:

 - it sounds louder than I thought it would
 - certainly quiet gruntly even at low revs
 - too easy to accidently red line it with DSG!  (hit 7k driving a little too enthusiastically!)
 - lots of grip and very tidy and darty handling, reminds me a little of my old MINI
 - reflection from the chrome air vents is a little annoying
 - factory bluetooth prep works great with my nokia (though took till the 2nd day for it to connect bizarrely)
 - it does have the one touch 3 blink indicating thing (again only started doing this on the 2nd day)
 - on the first night the camera stopped coming out, but since then been fine

(i.e. reliability not all that!)

Mk6 Golf GTI 5dr, DBP, Monza Shadow, Xenons, ACC, RCD510, Park Assist, Camera, Lux pack.... and now bluetooth.... and now DSG!

p.s.

 - auto parking works pretty well, steering wheel goes crazy!

 - everything (so far) has been really intuitive, hardly had to use the manual - though no doubt much more to learn if i do read it

 - standard speakers sound great :)

 - xenons are awesome... tho a little too keen to come on in auto mode in low light conditions.  full beams are dazzling!

 - kerbs seem so much bigger when you've got spanking new alloys

 - ride is very good and absorbs most of london's speedbumps very well

 - the boot lining is all a bit cheap imho (BM do it much better)

 - no idle issues, no rattles or squeaks as yet to report

 - i got the dunlops shytemxxes.... seem fine so far....

Something similar happened to a guy on another VW forum with the MK6 but not the GTi. Went to pick up his car and asked where the winter pack was....dealer forgot to include it with the original order. Doh.

He was told to keep the present car and not worry about mileage and they would order up another car with the spec he wanted. Sure enough, 3 months later the car with the proper spec arrived.

How do you mean you were offered the DSG at half price?
Was it the difference between a manual and DSG you had to pay but only half of it? So in effect you ended up paying more for a car that you ordered? Bloody cheek, they should have given you money back.  Supaguard is flung in free with many folks orders and the ipod cable is free as well. I'd have haggled a lot harder. Its their balls up at the end of the day.

I agree with all your initial impressions, much the same as mine. Had to laugh at the too easy to red line comment - I know what you mean  The DSG is great, though as you say, not perfect, despite what you read in the press. I would have tried to get it at no extra charge, though. Imagine if it had been the other way round and you got the manual instead of the DSG 'box; I doubt they would have just given you the car at the manual price.

Anyway, enough talk, we need pix!!!

4000 revs for me is the limit (200 miles on the clock, 800 to go :))
Golf GTI VI DSG - died on the road, resurrected, came back as zombi, sold
R - rising blue, 5-door, DSG, ACC, something something...

Good for you. :afro:

But just remember to gradually increase the revs and engine loading.  Running in an engine should never be 'stick at 4000 rpm for the first 1000 miles - then from 1001 miles, floor the throttle and bounce of the rev limiter'. :nerd:

I did a very detailed post in the Mk5 section on how to truely and carefully run in an engine.

You've got me worried now, mine is due this week.
Some would have refused point blank to accept a DSG although it seems you are quite enjoying it. If you are not 100% Ok with it I'm sure they will have to sort a manual out for you.
Enjoy.
