Are you leaving your light switch in the 'auto' position?

TT My light switch is on auto which is what my dealer told me to leave it at, and my xenons go out as soon as I take the key out.  What should I switch to, sorry bit dense when it comes to technical issues. lol

Your light switch on the dash, to the right of the steering wheel, under the vent.  From 'left to right' - it should have something like '0', then a picture of a tunnel (like an upside down capital U), then a likkle light symbol (side lights), then big light symbol (dipped headlamps).  Set the switch to the 'tunnel' position - this is the 'auto' position.

Only other thing I can think of is that the time delay for the 'arriving home' (or whatever they now call it) has been set to zero.  You can set different time delays for the arriving home (when you take the keys out and lock the car), to the leaving home (when you unlock the car).

Does this help?

On the newer mk5's the light switch says AUTO rather than the strange symbol that the earlier ones had.  I would presume they would carry this sensible advance forward to the mk6?

Silly question but is it dark when you get home?  Just because on the Mk5 if the lights are on because you were driving a bit quick or because the wipers were on constantly then they switch off as soon as you take the key out, they only stay on for a bit if its actually dark.  Sometimes if its twilight mine switch off as soon as you take they key out but other times when its proper dark they stay on for a bit...

Mk6 may of course be different...

Yeah its pitch dark as we dont have street lights or anything where i live. I will give the flash a go tonight and see if it works. Maybe VW have redesigned this so as to save 6 months of going to the supermarket in winter and

"you've left your lights on!"

  You may be right

It would be a sensible move, its entertaining the first couple of times.  Bloody annoying after that!

It does get annoying trying to explain to joe bloggs in the car park that your lights are supposed to do that

Great thanks TT will give it a go once darkness comes, which won't be too far away now as it seems summer has been and gone and autumn has arrived in all its glory. Cheers mate.

Went home this afternoon, whilst parked on the driveway I checked my settings on the mfd. then flashed my main beam before I got out and the headlights stayed on. As I went into my house the postman came to the door to deliver some mail, and said "think you have left your lights on mate".

what are the chances!! broad daylight too

I just tried this and it still doesn't work. How many times do you flash? once or twice and did you flash by pulling the stalk forward towards you as if flashing or away from you as if you were putting the main beam on? Have you got xennons R32UK?
