Why a mk3
« on: 30 August 2009, 01:11 »
I know it has been asked many times before, but it is always interesting to know why people
chose it over other marks:

For me it is asthetics, I think it is a beautiful car and in gti or vr6 form, it does everything i want from a car.

I personally think the 16v is the best mk 3, for all round performance, but i Love the vr6 sound.

Many Mk2's had burnt a hole in my pocket, my Fav Vlaver got splatted by a Mini.
MK3 was immac at the time, one owner FSH and 2k spent on MOT at VW.
Traded fun/speed for less spend and pushing

Ive got a Mk2 and lal my mates have mk3's but im goign to be biased and say the mk3's are too boxey and ugly imo only. But for some reason the mk3 gti seems slower than the mk2 and their suposed to be lighter i think

i've had one mk2(16v), 3 mk3's and 2 mk4's.  The mk 2 was the best drivers car , the mk4 was the most comfortable.
But  a well set up(and rust proofed mk 3) is the best compromise in my most humble opinion.

The mk3s are heavier than mk2s.

Mk4 is too expensive and don't trust the high mileage of mk2s
Nah, really I think the mk3 is a great car. It might not be the fastest, but that's not what I'm after *cough*

Bit of a long story but worth a read..

Well, being young, I was trying to get the best car for myself.

I was 16 and had bought myself a Mk2 Golf 1.6 CL for 20 quid. I was on a budget so I spent approximately 120 quid modifying it and my dad slapped an MOT on it as my 17th birthday present. Then somebody I knew with a Mk3 was after a different car, and said he really liked the look of my Mk2, so he wondered if I'd swap with him, and 300 quid cash my way! Needless to say, I ripped his arm off and became the proud owner of an L reg Mk3 Golf 1.4 Ryder which was 4/5 years newer than the Mk2 I'd just got rid of.

After spending time modding it and generally looking after it, I became attatched to it and didn't think I'd ever get rid of it, until somebody came and offered me 1600 quid for it  Once again, I ripped his arm off because I knew it wasn't worth anywhere near that, and I knew I could get another Mk3 Golf and have about a grand left over to modify it. So the car went, and the following day I picked up a P reg Mk3 Golf SE, I did nearly all the mods I did to the previous one, but this time around, I could afford coilovers, HID's and much more, so the finished item was better than my previous attempt.

I became attatched to that but it only ever brought me bad luck. I was stopped by the police in it 3 times, and it was getting on and needed work which I couldn't afford. The guy I'd sold my Mk3 Golf Ryder to, was in need of another Mk3, as his had been stolen and burnt out! So when he offered me 1400 quid for it, I had a think about it and decided to let it go because I wanted a Mk4. Nothing ever came of that though because Mk4's were too expensive, and I soon ended up with another poxy Mk3.
Gone but not forgotten;
1983 Mk1 Golf GX - 1991 Mk2 Golf GTI - 1988 Scirocco Scala - 1989 Mk2 Golf CL - 1993 Mk3 Golf Ryder - 1996 Mk3 Golf SE - 1996 Mk3 Golf CL - 1995 Mk3 Golf GTI 16v - 1996 Mk3 Golf VR6 Highline - 2003 Saxo VTR - 1996 Mk3 Golf VR6

Nothing wrong with the mk3, even though some people on here like to bash them all the time
Best model is vr6 for all round performance

I never considered the VW scene, but my uncle got a Siliver Mk3 GTI, was a fairly nice car. And at the time i had just came back from travelling.

So i looked into them, found this forum and started looking at the VW Scene and mk3s and other mks.

Got a job, and saved up to buy my Mk3.

I do like a mk2, but it couldn't be a daily.
