Why a mk3

Ive got a Mk2 and lal my mates have mk3's but im goign to be biased and say the mk3's are too boxey and ugly imo only. But for some reason the mk3 gti seems slower than the mk2 and their suposed to be lighter i think

dont think you know alot really  1. how is a more rounded shaped car more 'boxy' than an hard lined shed(mk2)  2. mk2 is lighter/better handling than a mk3 fact

Lets face it, a nice mk1 is silly money, a nice mk2 is silly money, and i really like mk4's but wouldnt own one. The mk3 is a nice affordable car and the money i paid for mine was nothing really for its age and condition. Its been SUPER reliable and a joy to own.

It isnt fast, isnt a great handling car, maybe not the prettiest either but what is for that kind of money. The MK3 gets a bum wrap and i cant really see why.

a mk2 weight is 950kg

a mk3 weight is 1250

thats why there alot slower than a mk2

mk2's are the best golf gti for sheer excitment and seat of the pants driving coz you really have to be on the ball and grab it by the scruff of the kneck.
Mk3's brake and handle better but lack the character and class of a mk2.

You buy a mk3 coz at the time you couldnt afford a mk4 or because you got fed up of a mk2 as a daily...there really a 2nd car these days hence my reason for buying a mk8 8v coz there cheap and my mk2 is in hiding for the winter with fooked engine.

Also an 8v mk2 leaves an 8v mk3 standing it really is alot faster and keeps up with the mk3 valvers until it hits 4th when the mk3 16v top end  torque opens up to let just about take over on a 1/4 mile there really isnt much in it...

Because you can get ABS and air-con as standard.
Looks better modified. A Mk1 and Mk2 look better left fairly standard.

A Mk4 is a fat arsed granny car thats super soft!

imo lowered polished to within an inch of its life couple subtle mods, wheels (you like) = winner. get them cheap enough and plenty good ones around, great mpg from 8v and reliable. Oh cheap too run, people talk too you on the street(vw fans) and good daily commuter. agian with the not the fastest but if driven right and not againt silly power can do well, at least put a bit of a worry on a face or 2 ha ha.

oh yeah and i too cant afford a porsche. but can beat one silly on my gsxr ha ha. win win

I have to say aestheticly mk3 is top notch, it is smother looking than the previous generations and looks alot more agressive and youthful compared to the newer models, which I belive look all together too tame.

the only reason for me purchasing a mk3 golf was for the mrs.  she seems happy enough with her golf cabby though.  i would have prefered a mk1 shape, but she wanted a reasonably safe car, plus the mk3 shape is a bit cheaper for a nice one.
cant say i find anything built after the mk2 golf shape that appealing from a styling point of view and i cant say ive been that impressed with the build quality, the mk3 shape likes to rust doesnt it!
i had a 1800 mk3, probably 5 or 6 years ago to do up and sell on, it was covered in rust!  the engine had done well though, sold it with 199k on the clock!

I was never really a fan and always wanted a mk1. I still do or maybe a mk2. I was about ready to buy my first car so needed to choose. Budget was around 2k and it needed to be some sort of vag motor. After much deliberation the mk3 came up trumps. Comfortable as i do alot of miles. Cheap enough to run and insure and can look sweet after a few simple mods.
