How / Where can i...
« on: 09 September 2004, 15:40 »
I really want to practice some drifting and sliding techneques, Ive got some wheels from a scrappy etc and watched / read a tuturial about how to do vairious actions such as hand break turns and J turns. However i dont know where to practice, Its not the actual driving im worried about, its the police. If im in an abandoned car park, With say, One or 2 other cars there, And where all being relitivly save and just trying to hand break round a traffic cone at like 10pm at night and the police show up, Could i loose my licence because of it?

check out www.driftworks.co.uk , they put on a show for us at a recent charity event, you should find all you need to know on their forum, although the first thing they'll tell you is to dump the golf for a rwd  :P

I would avoid any form of public place whatsoever.

The police really are cracking down on this sort of thing in public, and are inventing all sorts of new public order charges to slap you with every day.

Regardless of the time of day/night and your location, if its in public, you're bang to rights for endangering the public, causing damage to public property, driving without due care etc etc etc.

Plus, even of you get off without charge, your 'card will be marked' so to speak with the local police - you think you're being victimised as a young driver now, wait until the police see you doing that sort of thing in public - you'll be hounded by the police until you move or change your car.

Its this sort of driving that also causes massive police prescence at cruises - ask a copper that attends these things and he will tell you that they have no problem with decent people meeting and showing off their cars, its the tw4ts that drive like they're competing in an autotest, endangeringthe people stood less than 10 feet away that cause the problems for them.

Find someone who has some private property in which you can practice - if you don't know someone, then its time to make some new friends!!!

Just on a slightly different note, why do you want to learn how to do this? Its not really a skill that is going to make your daily drive any more pleasurable, and you're going to do untold damage do your cars clutch, gearbox and brakes. Why not do a track day instead? Not only will this cause less damage to your car (providing you keep it on the black stuff!) but you will polish your driving skills that will have an effect on your road driving. Just a thought ?;)

Or shell out a lot of money and do the Advanced Drivers course. Or go on a skid pan day. Loads of that sort of driving courses around. Off road or rallying.

Most of the race tracks do one day things for about ?80

I watched a vid about drifting and track driving etc, They say to master the use of the hand break (which the drift king recomends using while drifting) you need to practice in a car park. Dont get me wrong, I dont want to start doing burn-outs and donuts in car parks at cruises, I just want to learn the basics before i start applying it to the track etc.

I dont care what some Jap tw*t says - ya dont need to use yer hand brake to go round corners!

Even Rally drivers dont use em nowadays.

No track racer will use it. And drifting is not the quickest way to go round a bend.

Go on a good track day mate. They will show ya how to get the fastest way round a bend.

If your in the South then ya got Thruxton, Castle Combe or Brands Hatch to choose from.

Oh and you had better look up your drag racing history - Daddy Don Garlits started drags as it is now, plus a few more guys.
