ABF trouble. Possible clutch? Mabye Engine?
« on: 23 August 2009, 20:28 »
Hey - right, I'm in need of some fault diagnosis help.

Noticed this fault the other day driving.  It was ok yesterday, but then came back today.

I'm meant to be driving down the Lake District on Wednesday, so I'll need it sorted by then.

Right, here goes:

When driving in gears 2,3 + 4th its noticeable.

Revs are low, around 2000 rpm, when I try and accelerate there is no power, the revs rise slowly, to a point where everything kicks in to normal power.  The best way to describe it - is like driving 2 or 3 gears too high and accelerating (nothing really happens).

When I got home, I popped the bonnet, and could smell burning around the back of the engine.

Do you think this could be the clutch on the way out?  To begin with, I thought it was engine related, but I'm not sure yet.

There are no other symptoms that I am aware of.

If it is clutch, how much are they for a garage to replace?

Cheers

Chris

Get an 8 valve  16 valvers dont have a lot of torque low down, dont think it could be the clutch or engine would be revving.

Ok.

Any ideas what the burninbg smell could be?  I do have an oil leak from the filter i think.

I've been reading a post about oil getting into the distributor?  Any ideas?

Its not normal.

I've had my car for three years, and its driven most days.

Definatly something untoward.

Does the car 'judder' just as you release the clutch when pulling off the spot?  My 8 valver does this, possibly the low down torque puts more pressure on it on take off!

Haha.

Not really noticed any real judder.

I floored it coming off a roundabout earlier in 2nd.

VERY little response with the revs, and it did feel kind of like it was wheel spinning - although it definatly wasn't, so I suppose there was a bit of a judder.

Try changing the fuel pump and ecu relays.
If you think there is still a problem, put it on vag com.

Cool.

Fuel pump will cost around £50.

Relays around £10

That about right?

To be honest, I'm thinking about taking up to the dealers tomorrow and see what they think.

Just want to get to the bottom of it without faffing around.

Wil advertsie a local forum for Vagcom.

Ta!

Ok.  Cool.  Saves a bit of cash!

Am I right in saying (well, just read in the maintenance section) that if the relays are goosed they will be cold after driving round for a bit.

I'll take it out for a drive in the morning and see if they go warm or not.
