I expect others to have a similar point of view and not think the Golf GTI is a mythical beast over and above what it is.
I've had 2 (still have one) along with other VAG hatches (Fabia vRS, Ibiza Cupra Sport, Lupo GTI etc) over the years...and they are all good cars...but they do what I wanted them to do...be the family car.
I'm not a wind up merchant at all...I fully intend to drop £29k into a red, 5 door GTI in the next couple of months...and have no doubt i'll be delighted with it, as it will do EXACTLY what I expect it to do. What it won't do, is replace a Sports Car. It's unfair to expect it to...it's not designed to.

But I am able to see, and be proud of the fact that a Golf GTI - regardless of the Mk - is just a pepped up standard Golf.
Of course it is...it's not a ground up, new design.
I have no problem with that...nor buying one knowing that.

Exactly, they are what you want them to be and what they actually are, are very different.

GTI mk6, 3dr Manual (Yes Manual! If I wanted a Taxi I'd hail one, not spend £1500 on one), Candy White, Full Leather, Xenons, ACC, 18", RCD510 + Dynaudio, DAB Radio, Winter Pack, Luxury Pack, Fiscon Bluetooth Plus, Golf R LED's.

Sigh...there is little point in flogging this dead horse.

I have no problem with modifications, or with the standard car (every car I've owned has ended up modified in some way) but it seems some people can't see the limitations their car has. I'm not trying to offend anyone who has modified their car...but in my mind, the GTI is simply a properly modified/fetteld/pepped up Golf. No more. That in its self is the exact reason I want one.
A GTI will do exactly what I want it to do, which will make me happy. Itwill do exactly what VW built it to do...be a great all rounder.

What it will never do however, is replace a sports Car.

I wouldn't buy the car if i couldn't have xenons! an absolute must!

aside from the fact they provide really good visibility day and night, they transform the front end of the car massively!

i can't stand the standard lights compared to the look of the xenons!

DO IT!
Pirelli GTI, Diamond Black, 18s, 3dr, Manual. Extras - Xenons  Lux Pack  Parking Sensors  Cruise  Highline and MFSW  =  The Don!

Jesus wept...you must have a pretty poor understanding of what a Sports Car is, if you think a mass produced, FWD Golf is one.
It's not.

I'd have agreed with you 100%.  Except.

What Car? August 2009.  We all remember that on page 54 the VW Golf GTi Mk VI won the "Hot Hatch Megatest".  Did we also notice that on page 84, the third prize in the "Best Buy Sports Car" went to....

The VW Golf GTi Mk VI.

(First was the Nissan GT-R at £56,800 and second was the Ferrari 430 Scudera at £168,962.)

This isnt the case. I have a cunning way of using my TomTom in the MK5 which I will post up later when I get home, I think once you all see those with MK5 / 6 and TomToms will use this method from now on ;)

AlanD did you post your cunning way of using a TomTom in a MK 6?
