Just because you dont think it is, doesnt mean its not. f**k you even think its a family hatchback

Which means you have a pretty poor understanding of what a 'Sports Car' is, if you thing a tarted up Golf fits the bill.
So be it...if you are happy thinking you drive a 'Sports Car' then go for your life...

I have a Sports Car...and want a sensible family hatch, to do the shopping run in, and ferry my family about in...so I'll buy a Golf GTI, because that's ecactly what a Golf GTI is.
The two are very different.

While I will conceed that 'sports car' can be a marketing phrase to help sell a car,

It's also a discrete type of car, different design beief, different ethos, different target market, different expectations...
Completely different to a pepped-up hatchback.
I've had GTI Golfs for years...I choose them over the competition for the type of car they are...but Sports Cars they are not.
If I want a Sports Car, I'll buy a proper Sports Car. When I want a decent family hatch...I'll buy a Golf/A3/S3.

the GTI is not in this bracket in the slightest, it doesnt need any marketing ploy to sell it.

I agree...it never has.
Sadly, many bought on badge alone...which is why the Mk3 8v or Mk4 was so dissapointing...but hey, it's a Golf GTI right? So it's uber impressive?

You'll still buy a GTI with Xenons ? After the pish I've just read, you dont deserve one.

Yeah, I will. Because it does exactly what I expect it to do...and not what it's not designed to do.

That's if you will let me?
Jesus, you really need to chill out...it's a bloody Golf you have.

what a load of b0llocks.  a family hatchback is a 'normal' golf.  a family car is a picasso.  a golf gti is not a family car.  it may do the 'family' thing but its certainly not its primary concern.  yes, its not a porsche granted.  but its not a family car either.  its certainly more sporty than most things on the road.  i agree with vwkev - you're talking pish.

Then what exactly is it?
It's a souped up Golf. Nothing more.
A Golf GTI has been one of 'my' family cars for 13 years...am I going wrong somewhere?
It had 5 doors, a decent boot, reasonable handling, reasonable running costs, comfortable, practical...exactly what a family car should be - and is - for me.
So it's a family car.

You are right about it not being a Porsche...that's a Sports Car.
A Golf isn't a Sports Car.
It's a hatch...albeit a 'Hot' one.

More sporty than most things on the road?
Are you being serious?
It's not even more sporty than it's competition...

On this point I think it's you thats "talking pish".

Maybe you need to get out and drive more cars...?

It is a better car though, and the reason I'll buy one (that's if VWKev & VW let me).

Your definition of a sports car is obviously different from others, so lets leave that one where it is, I get the feeling though your mistaking a sports car from a super car perhaps ?. I need to chill out ? Maybe so, but what do you expect when you come out with some ridiculous statements like the GTI is a family hatchback, and things like saying the GTI is a tarted up Golf and you want the GTI so you can have a sensible family hatchback to do the shopping in ?  Come off it, your a wind up merchant.. If I didnt know any better that really does sound like someone who is having a pop at the car and completely degrading it. The GTI is iconic and the best all round hot hatch in the world. You'll do well to remember that and give it a little more respect.

Fair play...maybe it is.
I own a 'Sports Car' and know it's polar opposite from my Golf.

No, Sports Car = Boxster/Cayman/911/Vantage etc...
None of them are Supercars.

I expect others to have a similar point of view and not think the Golf GTI is a mythical beast over and above what it is.
I've had 2 (still have one) along with other VAG hatches (Fabia vRS, Ibiza Cupra Sport, Lupo GTI etc) over the years...and they are all good cars...but they do what I wanted them to do...be the family car.
I'm not a wind up merchant at all...I fully intend to drop £29k into a red, 5 door GTI in the next couple of months...and have no doubt i'll be delighted with it, as it will do EXACTLY what I expect it to do. What it won't do, is replace a Sports Car. It's unfair to expect it to...it's not designed to.

But I am able to see, and be proud of the fact that a Golf GTI - regardless of the Mk - is just a pepped up standard Golf.
Of course it is...it's not a ground up, new design.
I have no problem with that...nor buying one knowing that.

Iconic?
It was...and came back for the Mk5...but the Mk3s Mk4s? Iconic? Come on...
Neither the Mk3 or Mk4 were the best anything (and this is from someone who has a Mk3 Anniversary tucked up in the garage)...but they were very far from iconic 13 years ago!

I'm not having a pop...I'm just being honest.
It is what it is...and that is why I'll buy one.
Not because I'm convincing myself it's anything else.

Respect? Are you for real?
For offering an opinion?
I've been buying Golfs since 1993....so I respect the car well enough to have bought them in the past, and to do so again now.
Doesn't mean I can't hold an opinion different to yours, does it?

I'll say agian....it's a brilliant car, and does exactly what it should. And for that reason I'll have one...but for that reason alone, Not because I am pretending it's something it's not.

What else is it then Kev?
Why don't you englighten me to these basics I'm obviously missing, as my looking and test driving obviously has me at a loss?

Its a little more than a family hatchback.  Just.

Its a family hatch thats been made as sporty as you can make a family hatch within the limits of mass producing, reliability and affordability.

A sports car it is not.

I just think you boys are taking the whole argument a bit too far hence my comment. What makes you think my GTI is for doing the shopping run? Its my daily motor that does about 15k a year. .  Also thanks for commenting on my mods as tarted up, very polite of you sir

As for the debate, I dont think the GTI is a "sports car" so to speak. I associate sports cars with S200s, NSXs etc etc. It is essentially a family hatch back, but its not really is it as it goes like stink and has a sport appearance and feel to it. Trying to place a hot hatch in a bracket of car is quite a tricky job.
