Focus RS should be a family hatch by that definition too then ?

It is.
A 'Hot' one perhaps, but a family hatch none the less.

There's some family hatchbacks, you would think with the GTI being voted the best in the world and car of the year in one place, it would at least get one mention in there.

It's a hot family hatch. Use your head, the basic car is a family hatch with some stuff to make it faster. As opposed to a Porche Cayman or a Nissan 370Z or an Audi TT which are not family hatches but sports coupes. Jeez.

Have I got a camera on me, is this a wind up ? The GTI is not a sports car ?

Jesus wept...you must have a pretty poor understanding of what a Sports Car is, if you think a mass produced, FWD Golf is one.
It's not.

It's a damn fine car for sure...but a Sports Car?
What have you been smoking/drinking?

A Porsche 911 is a Sports Car, or a AM Vantage, or a silly TVR of some sort...even a GTR. An Elise/Exige...they are, even some form of Caterfield thingy.

But a tarted up family FWD hatch that rolled off Wolfsburgs production line along with the 'cooking' models?
Nope. Sorry...not to me it's not.

I'll still buy a Mk6 GTI (and probably pay for Xenons) but I'll not have any hint of a pretense that its a 'Sports Car'...or any delusion of grandeur that it's in any way above what it actually is: A well specced, neatly handling and reasonably quick Golf. Because thats EXACTLY what it is...and the reason I want one.

to be a family hatch it needs to have 5 doors imo and no loss of luggage space or seats compared to its lesser brethren.

golf gti is a "hot family" hatch.  R32 is pushing it, since it loses boot space due to 4WD hardware.

focus RS, R26R are 3 door only so not v. family friendly.... hence hot hatches only

other "hot family" hatches are: mazda 3 mps, leon cupra, bmw 130i (tho tiny interior), octavia vrS

They are all family hatches to me...just because there are only two of you in the family, and you choose 3 doors, doesn't impact on the definition of the car.
All the above are in the same 'class' - 'class' being family compatible, practical, comfortable, usable every day, hatchbacks.
So is the Audi A3 - and S3 (despite S3 owners thinking they hold some form of automotive enigma)...
R32 is too.

3 or 5 doors only adds to the practicality...and it's the owners choice.
But they are all family hatches - some better than others...and some worse than others (R26R as an everyday car...with all the scaffolding in the back? Hmm)

The main point is that NONE of them are Sports Cars. Never have been...never will be.

Beaten to it by others...always the bridesmaid...

In my opinion (and that of others it seems) the Mk6 Golf GTI is a fine, fine car...brilliant at some things...but it isn't and never will be anything other than a premium family hatchback - certainly not a Sports Car.

Sorry if I use the wrong word to describe the GTi. GTI is a 100% 'HOT' hatch! IT INVENTED THIS CLASS OF CAR ALL THE WAY BACK IN 1976! (Hope I got the year right!)

Interesting discussion here. What is a sportscar?
In my opinion, not even a normal 911 can be classed as a 100% sportscar
Its more like a sports coupe. The GT2, GT3 and GT3RS are the only genuine no compromised sports 911.
How about those ultrafast saloons---C63AMG, RS6 and M3. We call them sports saloon.
The RS6 might have more power than a V8 R8 but R8 is the sportscar while the RS6 is a saloon with supercar performance!

More and more car owners want a bit more luxury and practicality in a performance car which blur the boundary between grand tourer and sportscar!

hmmm have you guys and gals noticed that cars that have more of a blue tint for their headlamps causes visibility to be not as good as with the yellow ones? Its not that the blue ones lack power but more that it blends into the night. Or is it just me?

Just because you dont think it is, doesnt mean its not. f**k you even think its a family hatchback   While I will conceed that 'sports car' can be a marketing phrase to help sell a car, the GTI is not in this bracket in the slightest, it doesnt need any marketing ploy to sell it. You'll still buy a GTI with Xenons ? After the pish I've just read, you dont deserve one.

what a load of b0llocks.  a family hatchback is a 'normal' golf.  a family car is a picasso.  a golf gti is not a family car.  it may do the 'family' thing but its certainly not its primary concern.  yes, its not a porsche granted.  but its not a family car either.  its certainly more sporty than most things on the road.  i agree with vwkev - you're talking pish.
