Car stereo troubles.
« on: 14 August 2009, 13:34 »
As above, i have a 97 GTI & bought it with the stereo not working, didn't make a big deal out of it as i thought
it was probably a loose wire or fuse. Checked all the wires/fuses i can but now i think it's time to dig deeper
behind the dash. Any idea of how to remove the center piece so i can get a better look?

I removed the heater controls but the dash was still firmly in place.

Anyway, when i have the dash off, what should i check for?

Cheers

[EDIT]

I've given up & removed the stereo lol.

I've taken it all out now. :embarassed:
I'm going to get a new stereo (old one is only a tape one) & get the shop to do it.

Thanks for your reply anyway.

Ok guys, i feel i'm getting somewhere.

Today i found a blue wire just hanging there in the loom so i connected another wire to it from the battery & the stereo lights came on!
But the stereo just had a blank blue light with nothing coming up, do you think the stereo is buggered?

If i do get a new stereo & it works, what do i do with the blue wire as i can't just keep it connected to the battery. Should i find another power source like the positive on a cig lighter?

Cheers

Hi Mate     The only wires needed for a stereo (of any kind) are the red yellow and black wires. These three wires will power up a stereo. They are a permanent live, ignition live and earth. The blue wire is usually either an electric aerial wire or mute wire. Just working from memory but usually the yellow in the loom connects to the red on stereo, the red in loom to the yellow on stereo and black to black. Connect these up and turn on stereo, preset some channels then turn off ignition for about 5 mins and go back and turn on ignition again, if the channels are still preset it's done. If the channels have disappeared switch the red and yellow and it's done.  If the red and yellow are put on the wrong way it won't harm the stereo as they are just for memory purposes.  The speaker wires should be 8 wires over four colours, there will be for example a white and a white with black stripes. Once the stereo is on it's just a case of connecting these to the stereo speaker wires and fading the stereo to get the right connections.

The easiest way to access the wiring for the stereo is to remove the glove box!!!  To do this remove the lower dash panel on passenger side (about 5 screws) then remove the glove box which is three bolts underneath and two screws inside at top but don't forget to remove the light first as will get damaged if not removed. Once the glove box is out the wiring is there for you. Another hint is to fit stereo first as some of wiring may need to be tucked away before refitting glove box.

Hope this helps.

Cheers     Deano

Hi Deano, followed your advice & it worked. :D I connected a wire from the battery, fed it through the engine bay & connect it to the red wire on the stereo & the display came on!

Speakers also work great.

Top stuff mate.
