What upgraded brakes for 1987 Mk2 Gti 16v ?

Hi, i am you picking up a 1987 Mk2 Gti 16v next week with the intention of using it soley for trackdays so it will be stripped/caged & coilovers/arb's etc. I am new to VW's & want to upgrade the brakes as i think it will have the 239mm setup on the front as its a very early 16v with small bumpers & quarter lights in the front doors. I have heard somewhere that can fit the Corrado G60 front brake setup 280mm ? Is this right ? . I want to keep to 15 inch wheels as the R888 tyres will be cheaper if i keep to a small wheel. What other options do i have regarding brakes bearing in mind my budget for front brakes will be about £500 max. I used to use my old M3 evo for trackdays & Ring trip & now have a E39 M5 so i really want to keep thje costs down on the Golf & do it on a budget. If the G60 setup would be ok what parts would i need ? I have a access to a VW breaker local to me.

G60 brakes should bolt straight onto 16v hubs and will be fine behind 15" wheels,I'm sure someone will confirm this soon,you can get a complete g60 setup on eBay,I thought all the valvers came with 256mm discs on the front,that's what mine has and it's an 89/90.also if you want even more stopping power there are several companys out there that do disc and caliper conversions for reasonable prices altho 280 is the limit for 15" wheels.

early 16v's had 8v brakes so you will need hubs from a later 16v with 256 brakes and the calipers and carriers from a g60 to go 280mm. its a huge upgrade though, well worth it

Without hi-jacking the post, but is it possible to move the front brakes to the rear and have 280mm setup on the front? Thinking of doing the 280mm disc swap on my Golf soon.

I think i'd be a nightmare to move the fronts to the back, and rather overkill imo as 90% of the braking is done at the front. Someone correct me if i'm wrong tho!

the guys on the corrado forum have developed a kit to put 280's on the back. havent read through it though as i see no point as russ has said.

The later Mk 2 16v hubs with 256mm brakes are they fitted to any other VW models that might be more common in the scrap yard ? Does it have to be calipers & carriers off of a G60 Corrado or are they fitted to other models, i'm sure i read somewhere that some of the Passats had the same calipers/carriers. When buying braided brake lines what ones will i need, G60 ones ? Does the brake master cylinder need changing ?

Have a look on eBay I know there are atleast two g60 brake setups on there at the moment,complete with everything u will need to do the conversion.

the hubs can be found on a few audis as well, but im not sure which models. im sure someone else can confirm

its the carriers that are the important bits and have to be off a g60, but i believe you can use 16v calipers on them

braided lines are braided lines, get the 6 line mk2 kit

you can change the mc to a 22mm one, which is the same on g60's and 16v's. the 8v ones were smaller
