Changing pads on 1.4 mk3 golf
« on: 14 August 2009, 08:58 »
Is there anything I should know that might be tricky before I attempt this?

I will get some copper grease, not changed a set of pads before, but have replaced front and rear shocks myself before, so i'm hoping this should be a walk in the park!

I'm pretty sure there are 2 types of pad for my car, so I guess I will have to take the old ones into a motor factors place to size them up and get the right replacements.

I think the difference in shape is where it sits in the caliper... The discs are not ventilated.

I guess it's because 2 different types of caliper were used for abs or non abs, but it is only a guess. Not sure if mines got abs or not

If its got abs there will be a little light on the dash that comes on with the ignition and goes out when you start. If you have the correct model and year you should get the right pads. I dont advise people to mess with there brakes unless they have been shown how by a professional, but if you are I would advise getting a haynes.

Thanks for the reply.

I dont think mine has abs, as the only light that goes on and off on with the ignition is the airbag light, close to the window.

1.4s did not have ABS.

I would be surprised if there is more then one type for this car? if so giving your reg/engine number at motor facotrs should suffice.

and as said, unles you know what your doing, you dont want your breaks failing doing 70 on the mway!.

Strange as I asked a motor factors before and they said there were two types, One which did have abs, one that didnt  :nerd:

But i got into a different motor factors today, gave them the reg and bam, they told me straight away what I needed...  :smug:

Got some brake cleaner and copper grease, so I am good to go.

What difference does it make if its got abs?

Pretty sure there is a mounting clip of some description behind the ABS ones, as I got them before and was then told they wouldnt fit my car.

Anyhows, £15 for some mintex pads and £10 and a man that can later, I got them fitted  :smug: Cheaper than a garage and the guy had it done pretty quickly.
