8V is slower then it should be
16V is meh.
VR6 heavy on fuel.

Go for the fecking 16V and ignore all the bullsh!t about 8v's keeping up or being faster, it's all f**king sh!te, the MK3 is a big heavy boat and no 8V engine is going to tug it, it's like a fish trying to drag a whale along.
Golf MK3 1.8 auto and I didn't pay a grand for the "priveledge", auto windows all round and a AC. Oh and I've got a luggage net you pricks!

Does that make my willy look bigger?

Oh yeah it's called Helda or something....

8v for fuel economy and cheap insurance (who wants that from a GTI?)
16v for a bit of go
VR6 for noise and grunt but you'll need deep pockets for the thirst.

The torque is imaginary and coming from an 8V owner's head, in his anus.

Yes Mikester, you do.
