ticking/clicking from beneath the dash!
« on: 05 August 2009, 19:42 »
I've had this noise for a while now and when I don't have the radio on it's quite noticeable. It's really tricky to explain exactly what the noise sounds like but it's there all of the time. The ticking speeds up when I increase the revs. It sounds as though it's from the centre top of the dash but without ripping the car apart I don't really know what it could be.

Anybody have any ideas?

I think I have the same noise mate.

I just keep the stereo on

Seriously, this hasn't caused me any problems so far that would make me want to rip my dash out as everything still works as it should.

Something loose or a relay maybe.

I've just started it up again. Put my finger on each relay and it doesn't seem to be an issue with that. I then put my head right on the dash - it's one of those noises where it's tricky to pinpoint the exact position. I think it's near the back of the dash - nearest to the windscreen.

You sure it's coming from the dash and not the engine bay? ie:the tappets?

I'll check it out tomorrow morning and report back... From memory - when I checked a few months back - I couldn't hear the noise coming from the engine bay but with that said the engine bay is a fairly noisy place to hear a tiny clicking noise when you've got the bonnet open.

Sounds like it could be what mine does and from what I understand many other Mk3 GTI's tend to suffer from as well, a dodgy exhaust downpipe / manifold. Almost tappit like sounding and like you say increases with road speed but can't really be identified once stationary which is simply annoying.
