Expected Idle Revs - 700 RPM????
« on: 04 August 2009, 13:38 »
Went to start my car today (never noticed this before) - struggled initially then fired up (only one key turn though), revs went to about 1100 and then the rev needle kind of "incrementally" dropped (maybe decrementally - hard to describe) to 700 - 100 a time.  I'm sure my idle has always been around 1000.  There are no warning lights on and took it out (hoping it woudn't break down!) and it felt a bit "flat" - revs seem to drop off too quickly (or differently to before)

I know not a very good description but any ideas appreciated (I know it could be a 1001 things)?  Sods law I need it tomorrow!  As no engine warning going to risk it but would like to get it into the stealers but with a bit if background info before they start replacing stereo and seats to fix it

Car is standard

Starting off at high revs at roughly what you describe is normal when cold then drops down to 700/800 on mine too.  Perfectly normal.  If you have your a/c on though the normal idle will sit a bit higher.

Sounds just like mine when I got it. Changed the PCV valve to no effect, then changed the DV and that fixed it. Would also explain loss of power :afro:

Thanks for the replies - sounds like the idle is ok then (maybe the only reason I noticed this was because of the stuttery start - normal just start and go )

Any "idiots guide" to where the PCV and DV are and what to look for (maybe pics if anyone have them to hand) - don't spend any time under the bonnet  :embarassed:

If yours is the standard GTI (not Edition30 of Pirelli) then the DV is located on the turbo housing.  This is at the rear of the engine, near the bottom, so you need to jack up the car, or get it on a lift.

The PCV is much easier, though you need to remove the engine top cover.  It is a black plastic item, on the front edge of the cylinder head above the inlet manifold.

Agreed, my R32 does it too, totally normal and nothing to be worried about.
