ECP and Engine Light ON!!
« on: 03 August 2009, 21:13 »
Hi All and welcome to my latest problem...

Took the car for a fairly long drive on Saturday and when i started it up on Sunday the ECP light came on but thought I would take it for the short journey anyway and see if anything changed. Started it up to come home a couple of hours later and the engine light appears... no loss of power - car was driving perfect, so whats the problem?

Thought I should book it in at the stealers for them to run a diagnostics but for some reason unknown to me they didnt have a slot free until the 13th August!! WHAT A JOKE. So with safety in mind I googled local mobile mechanic with diagnostics and sure enough I called one out a few hours later.

He ran a diagnostics check and it turned out there is a fault with the ECU although he was under the impression that even if i took it to Volkswagen they wouldnt be able to diagnose it further and just end up telling me I needed a new ECU. He was also adament that it is still safe to drive.

Anyone had this problem before/ think I should seek further advice? Or is this the start of bigger problem?

Thanks in advance

Did you make a note of the error(s) that were logged? After which he could have maybe tried clearing it and seeing if it returns (after all, this is all so-called "mechanics" at the main dealer will do!)

Ring the guy and ask him what the fault code was. Was it just a little box of tricks that beeped or did he plug a laptop in?

Replacing the ECU is usually the last resort when you can't communicate with it / certain modules at all.

Where abouts are you?

Since it's a hard fault, google another local Indy, play dumb, get a second opinion. These guys often don't charge anyway for having a quick diagnostic check with a view to getting the work... Certainly worth a try if there is someone local to you.

Let the fun begin........Red Gti, full colour coding, DSG, Xenons, Winter pack, Lux pack, Highline, Sat Nav, Sunroof, Leather, Milltek, ABT rear valance, Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics....pescaras :-)

ok will do. It looked like a laptop only differnce being the screen was actually built in/ face up on the base unit so not a conventional laptop!

I'm in Dagenham, Essex.

rosstech wiki says this..

Quote
When found in 2.0l TFSI:

    * Check Engine Control Module Software Version and Update if necessary.

worth trying before you have to replace the ECU!
