Help Needed
« on: 31 July 2009, 09:17 »
Bit of a problem, just upgraded my MK5 Gti to a newer one that came with DSG and had a lot less miles on the clock.
I think it is absolutely awesome   , however the missus hates it  , doesn't like the DSG at all and wants me to get rid and replace with a 'proper' manual Gti.  In particular she just feels that she isn't really in control when braking. Any tips\ideas on how I get her to like it and enjoy it like I do? otherwise watch out for it being For Sale in the classifieds really soon.

What does she mean by not being in control when braking - having DSG shouldn't make any difference? Use the brakes instead of the g/box to brake - they're a damn site cheaper to replace!

Anyway [/rant], I've always been a die-hard manual fan, so it took me literally 3 months to adapt to the DSG. Found that using it in manual is sooo much more rewarding, especially if you have the paddles.

I suggest you go out with her driving (if you dare!) and watch what she's doing (right & wrong).

If im honest I found the same problem. Going round corners it tends to still be in a much higher gear than if you were in a manual. The only solution to this is to pop it into manual mode and use the paddles or stick to up/down shift.

Not sure I understand the bit about being in control when braking but the initial problem I had (coming from manual to DSG) was when braking for a corner (left hander off a main road for example) the road speed was obviously decreasing because of me braking but the box wasn't always in the gear I expected - so were in a manual I would take it for example in 2nd, the golf was sat in 3rd.  What this highlighted to me was maybe I was carrying too much speed before I made the turn so now I find my braking approach has changed to get the DSG working for me.  The other option was to blip it down one manually on the paddles

I don't know if you have paddle shift but has she tried the box in "manual" (sequential) - maybe if she was controlling the gears she would feel better - obviously if she screws it, it will change up automatically (maybe manual, sport is her option  )

It is difficult one - you will see on this forum lots of discussion on DSG - it's like Marmite

Hope she gets used to it - not sure I would be ar$ed selling up so close to getting it

Get her to use the paddles or the stick. At first I found it worst going around roundabouts as it was always in too higher gear.

She's old school in the driving sense and has always felt more in control of a car when decelerating with gears

I suggest you go out with her driving (if you dare!) and watch what she's doing (right & wrong).

Been out and she was quite nervous found it really uncomfortable and compared it to a computer game, which she doesn't get her head round either.

Yes thats the problem she has! I tried talking her through it but she was having none of it

Yes its got paddles and they really confuse her

Speaking to the Stealer I bought it from to see if he can swap it, he's just got an R32 in similarly priced, but higher mileage

Get the R

Seriously though she needs to learn to like it, if you bought it then she should be grateful to drive it! My G/F wasnt a fan of the DSG at first but tried for me as she knew i wanted it, as i bought it she had to lump it. She enjoys it now and is just starting to try manual.

Trouble is 'we' bought it, I spent weeks mulling over what to by, tested the A3 Sline 2.0TFSI and a load of others, decided I wanted another GTI as it just felt right, said to her I was looking at the DSG and thought as we have had (see other post) an automatic Freelander all would be ok. She seemed reluctant but said I'm sure it will be fine, I stupidly didn't get her to test drive it, i just went and bought it
