16v clutch advise - Qaife diff?
« on: 29 July 2009, 16:14 »
My 16v golf needs a new gearbox so I'm going to bite the bullet and buy a brand new one, a reconditioned case but with all new internals.....

Its a very solid car with a rebuilt and tuned engine putting out a fair bit more than standard hp

Has anyone fitted anything other than a standard Sachs clutch to their car?

Would it be worth fitting a Black Diamond clutch or somthing similar?

Any advice welcomed

159 bhp

It's eaten the diff rivets on the existing box so I'm looking at getting one with a bolted diff for peace of mind.

We spend time and money increasing the power and handling of near 20year old cars so stuff like this happens I guess.

Quotes I've had so far have been pretty pricey though

A standard sachs clutch would cope with that.

Between £500 and £700 depending on whether I go for a standard rebuild or all new internals and a bolted diff.

I'm tempted to try to get hold of a Quaife diff and then go for the rebuild option.....

True a sachs Clutch will cope with it no worries I've got one in there at the moment, I just wandered how much extra bite or what improvement an uprated clutch would give me, if I'm going to fit a new box with a waranty its worth putting a new clutch in.

Have you had any experience with non standard clutch's?

Yes most of the ones I have tried are a nightmare in traffic plus very heavy.

Thanks Wayne I think ill stick with a standard sachs clutch then.

How about Quaife diffs? Does anyone reckon they're worth having?

No point unless running crazy power, or drifting.

As for performance clutches the higher spec you get, the snappier they get.

I'll hold fire on the diff as well then........... at least until I've got enough spare cash for the 20vt engine I'd like
