The vw parts number for the oil is the quoted on the back of the castrol edge  0-30 bottle so i would assume you can use it.( vw 502)

'502.00' isn't a VW parts number at all.  It is merely an oil specification standard - and any oil company who makes an oil to that standard can submit a sample to VW for testing and evaluation - and be granted said standard.

But 502 is still NOT the best oil for the GTI.  504 oils are considerably higher quality, and VW workshops MUST now only use 504 oils.

Double standards here, If I talked to people like that I would be bringing down the tone of the board, or lowering the atmosphere of the mk6 section and things like 'this is not a good section to visit'.... Anyone else, then they are 'just helping out' and we should listen to them.

Homebase still doing 1L of Castrol Edge 5W-30 half price...grabbed a couple this morning. Mind you I only used 2L in the 4 1/2 years I had the mk 5 GTI..we'll see if the mk 6 is a easy on the oil

If you are only topping up in between services,say less than half a ltr in a year using 502 this surely would not be enough to dilute or effect the other 4.5 ltrs of oil in the engine ?

Well, to slightly pedantic first, if you need to add half a litre, your sump volume will have reduced to just four litres - which means somthing like 12% loss of oil. 

But to answer the comment, using upto a maximum of half a litre of non-approved oil is perfectly acceptable for top ups between services.  However, from experience, you will need a lot more than half a litre for top up - as virtually all VW Group engines are known to have quite a high oil consumption for the first few thousand miles.  Generally, they take anywhere between 8k and 13-14k miles before they stop drinking oil.  But this is highly dependent on how they are initially run in.

Because Volkswagen, just like all manufacturers, are constantly evolving and improving.

But to try and clarify further - if you are on T&D servicing, and you, the driver/owner need to top up (or even want to do your own oil change), then 502.00 is perfectly acceptable.  However, a 'better' oil is the 504.00 (for a whole range of very technical reasons).

But what peeps seem to be getting confused with is what Volkswagen WORKSHOPS are allowed to use, and what Volkswagen RETAILERS are allowed to sell you.  VW workshops are NOT allowed to use anything other than 504 oils, and VW retailers are not allowed to 'sell over the counter' non 504 oils.  But if you want to use an independent workshop, you can use 502 oils - but as I have repeatedly stated, 504 oils are considerably better - and are much more preferable and suitable for the turbocharged GTI engine.

Jesus - can't anyone be arsed to search the forum.  It has been long established that ALL Volkswagen Group engines, for ALL cars, irrespective of target market - are factory filled with:

VW504.00/VW507.00, from Fuchs Petrolub
So just in case you don't get it - that is:

factory-filled with LongLife3 oil

Huh, I don't quite get you? 

Just to clarify, both 502.00 and 504.00 oils are 'allowable' - and providing you have used an oil which genuinely meets one of those two standards, then you will NOT have any probs with warranty.

But if you do try and make a warranty claim for an engine issue where the lubricant is called into question - then they WILL send a sample of the sump oil for analysis - and if there is any trace of non-approved oil, they WILL reject the warranty claim.  This is standard procedures for most car manufacturers.  Oh, and they only need 150ml of oil to be able to fully test the oil - and this is a 'bread and butter' operation for the oil companies.

So would you all blindly take what the 'headline' text stated, but completely ignored the small print - and you think you would be water-tight? 

The small print clearly states you should consult VW for the very latest, up-to-date info on any specification changes - and you would be extremely foolish to dismiss any such 'small print'.

I think TT meant the 504 is a better oil. Not that you shouldnt use it.
