Am I being overambitious?
« on: 25 July 2009, 15:23 »

Just sold my Renault Clio and fancy a mk3 golf gti 8v or 16v, but every single one I have seen where sheds. It’s not as if they where cheap, am I being overambitious to find a clean 3dr with decent miles and sound bodywork, I am willing to pay good money too.

Expect to pay more for a 16v. Remember insurance will be dearer too.

1500 will get u a good sound one. Although you can get minters cheaper, and sheds for double that. It's all down to what people think something is worth to them. Took me ages to find mine.

How much should you expect to pay for a 16v then? Insurance is no difference between a 16v & 8v for me. Don't know why this is.

As he says 1500 should get a good one. Think the diff in insurance is worse the younger you are.

Cheers for that. For an 8v then are you looking at about £800 & up for a good clean one? Seems to go for that on Autotrader but with higher mileage.

Pick an 8v, less chance it has been thrashed to within an inch of its life.

  • It may be just an 8v but it's my 8v!

I think it varies depending on what area you are in but around my neck of the woods 8v and 16v are going for the same money really  :undecided:. I find its the vr's holding more money!

If you pick an 8v you'll always want more power, but as Wayne says, there's less chance of it having been thrashed to within an inch of its life. Everyone has their favourites but I'd say go for the 16v if you can find a good one

Keeping schtum. Mostly.

A lot of people say though that the 8v is better for every day driveability as the power is a lot lower down the revs. The 8v and 16v are basically the same engines with different heads.
