Oil Confusion!
« on: 22 July 2009, 16:46 »
Just spent what seems like an eternity reading all 9 pages of this thread http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=98261.80 and others on the same subject and have come to the conclusion that my 2008 57plate GTi which is on T&D service intervals should have LL3 oil as this is what VW now use for all services.

Is this correct?

Only reason I ask is because I've been phoning dealers to get a service quote and VW Manchester told me they would use semi-synthetic oil on T&D and LL3 would be $35 more if I asked for it.

So what is going on?! Surely the dealers should know which oil to use!!!

I'm on T&D servicing, but specifically ask for the long life oil putting in. It didn't cost me a penny extra either as I'm on a servicing contract, but I thought it may have as the LL oil is literally double the cost of the T&D oil.

Like you I thought that VW had moved to LL oil as standard now too.

Just got off the phone with dealer - they told me that LL3 is only required if you have a particulate filter - I said mine's a GTi not a diesel - she asked someone else and they said doesn't matter. Do new petrols now come with a particulate filter?! Not heard of that one.....

Anyway - I'm now paying £30 extra for the LL3 oil - Total price £198.45 for 2nd service. Originally they quoted £220 at VW Oldham with std oil but they price matched VW Manchester who can't service my car for over a week and VW Oldham is walking distance. :)

This doesn't include Brake Fluid change though which is £54.99.

Yup! :afro:

That is WRONG info.  Make a formal report to Volkswagen UK - because from December 2008 - ALL Volkswagen Group workshops in the UK MUST only use LongLife3 oils, irrespective of the actual service regime.  If any official VW Group franchised dealer is still using non-LL3 oils, then they are FAILING to comply with the very specific instructions from Volkswagen Group United Kingdom Limited, AND Volkswagen AG.  Furthermore, ETKA, ONLY lists LL3 oil for all Mk5 related cars, including the GTI.

Finally - absolutely NO Volkswagen Group cars with turbos are authorised to use anything other than fully synthetic oils - even the older non-LongLife oils were fully synthetic (though a much lower quality).

Seriously, shop the b@stards to VW UK, because how many other dubs are they fcuking up with the wrong oils?  It is strealers like these that make me so effing angry!!!

So what is going on?! Surely the dealers should know which oil to use!!!

The dealers DO know - however, most peeps at main dealers are NOT the brightest sparks, and are well-known to get the intricate requirements of the LL oils and LL regimes wrong.

I had to ask for LL oil for my third service and paid £15 extra for the privilege.

TT, do you have a link to the VW service bulletin that forum members could print out and wave in front of these dumb asses at the stealers?

TBH, an extra £15 isn't too bad - that works out at an extra £3.26 per litre.

It isn't a 'service bulletin' as such.  And I can't post a link.  However, this info comes from ErWin.de - which is a 'paid for' subscription to VWAGs offical ElsaWin - which is updated every night direct from Wolfsburg.  Log onto www.ErWin.Volkswagen.de - set up an account, and you should find the info there.

Secondly, the actual oil specification for every single car Volkswagen Group has EVER produced is listed on ETKA - this I do have a copy (though not legit, if you get my drift ) - and for every single variant of the Mk5 Golf - it ONLY lists oils to VW504.00 for petrol engines, and VW507.00 for diesel donkies.  And I'm sure most of recognise those standards as the 'LongLife3' standard.  Unfortunatey, due to a ballache with my internet wiring at home, my ETKA stuff is on my destop, but I'm surfing from a lappy netbook - so can't screendump for you.

Do a screen capture on your desktop and save the file on an usb key. The file can then be transferred to your laptop.
