Drive a BMW 1 Series and you will realise how good a car can handle!

Do the Beemer 1's handle good then? My old man is thinking of getting a 1 series

Very well balanced car, and the 130 is all about tail out fun. 265bhp through the rears in a small car is always going to be a hoot. Problem is you either love em or hate em. Personally I really like them, as they are very well put together, but if you were looking at brand new then I would go Golf everytime and pocket the difference.

Whilst I accept that the 1 series may be a better car (in all classes to be honest), the one thing they got wrong was the styling  A truly grim-looking car.

This is coming from someone who owned Scoobies - a car renowned for it's legendary handling and performance, let down by truly awful styling!!!

Whilst the mk5 may still err on the side of conservative (in comparison to the Renaults & Vauxhalls etc), it is still (25 years later) bought because of its all-round ability.

The arguement about sales=stealing from within its own group is still valid. The Audi costs more, and imho would be mroe of a profit for VAG. We all know that the mk5 never made much for VAG due to its manufacturing costs - hence the mk6. This is a car that I'm not too sure sure on, still don't like the styling, but I think it may grow on me.

Just to add fuel to the fire, I've driven the mk4 and was left feeling very let down  but I then drove the GTI diesel, and thought it was fantastic

It's all about heritage and development - imho, the mk5 moved on SO much further from the mk4, that when the mk6 appeared, there wasn't as a big a difference between the two.....

All imho of course

Dan

^^ that seems to be the issue that most people stuggle to come to terms with. The MK6 is better than the MK5 but how much better is still open to debate. Most people will be happy with their current choice and it these tough times it wont make sense to most to make the switch.

Get one. Get a 118d, chip it... 200+bhp, 50mpg+ £30 road tax

Its a no brainer of a car

I found the 118d to have a horrible jarring ride on Lake District roads.  The Golf GTI is much better as an allrounder, handling potholes with ease.

Horrid little mini-hearse looks and gnome only rear seats, it's not really a good car you know.

I agree I think the GTI is a much better drive overall. But running costs are very high compared to the 118d, and it doesnt even touch it for build quality which is in a different league, so as a mode of transport you can't really go wrong.

But you want a bit of sparkle and costs dont matter, GTI every time.

Well he copied his quote!!!
I think I would have the R32 over a 130i M Sport to be honest on looks. As for handling though they are different cars but I think the 1 series has it. At the end of the day its personal taste plus both cars appeal to different people and age ranges...
