possible relay failiure
« on: 23 June 2009, 15:32 »
Im hoping you guys can give me some help or a push in the right direction .
The car has been of the road now for 2 months after failing its mot , in this time i have had to replace the cat and lamba sensor , plugs and leads and fit a new brake line and bleed the brakes up .
So on tues i fit a new tyre which i thought was my last job before the new mot , once i had done this i got in and went to start it up(been doing this atleast once a week) and get it up to running temp and gat the rust of the discs with a spin around the block . The fuel pump primed and then a small amount of smoke came from behind the steering wheel . The car then tried to start and then the clocks all reset at the same time putting the clock to 00.00 and making the alarm sound . After i reset the alarm the same happens if i try to start the engine . The first thing i tried was jump leads just incase the battery had gone flat (didn't work) I then checked the fuses and they were all fine . So after hours looking through this site i think it may be relay no167.
Basically does this sound like it could be the cause of the problem , i am fine when it comes to swinging a spanner but am sh1t on the electrical side of things. After cleaning the contacts up behind the steering wheel this little fella is clicking like mad , would this be a sign of it being knackered or trying to work overtime due to something else down the line being the problem .
Sorry if this is long-winded but thought more info the better. I look forward to any feedback.
Andi .

sounds like its shorting or something, im no expert on electrics but i would suggest that changing the 167 and 30 relay for a start may be a good idea before any damage is caused...
if its still doing it after that i wouldnt know where to go!!
hth!!
ps - do the relays feel warm after this happens?

not really checked for the temp as it didn't sound to clever when it was clicking . Had another look at lunchtime today and my central locking isn't working of the fob now , checked the battery (it read 11.7 volts) but i couldn't check the ampage is it possible that it reads the correct voltage but has lost its guts for the locking etc .

its a bit down on what it should be holding but thats prob cos ya havent been able to run it long enough to top it up after messing around, lol
sounds very electrical to me...
see what others say who are more familiar as it does sounds a bit worrying to me...
actually...
try another battery and new relays... cos my raddo did weird things when the battery was dying....
give that a whirl.. hth

Bit of an update , i have tried a good battery and the car is still behaving like it has a flat battery so that is one thing eliminated i suppose . My main concern is could a faulty relay cause the car to be like this (windows not opening , central locking not working etc) or do you think it sounds like something more serious . I will replace relay167 and 30 in the meantime and see how it goes but any ideas would be mucho appreciated .

hey m8, how are ya getting on??
mine did a wierd thing this morning, same as yours really, no smoke or anything but it sounded like it shorted the battery and reset the clocks, and ticked like it was flat, then wound the window down..?
just wanted to see if you had had any luck?

Yo Rob im a bit embarrased to post this but here goes anyway , the jump leads i had were funked . My mate had fixed them so i whacked them on my birds motor and it fired up straight away just a flat battery  god knows were the smoke was coming from but has been fine , all electrics as normal . After putting the dash back together i actually hoovered it and cleaned the inside . So its mot time tues fingers crossed .
