mk4 golf fitting power cable guide
« on: 19 June 2009, 00:01 »
here goes to do the job properly you need to do the following
remove the centre console(refer to haynes manual to save me typing how to take it out)
this is neccessary as there is a hidden screw behind it that prevents the glove box from being removed
pop off the plastic end dash cover on the passenger side
undo all the T20 torx/stardrive screws holding in the glove box
when removed pull the white fluffy material up to one side and look up to the top of the bulkhead(you may need a torch) and you will see a large grommet this is the entry point into the car
now go to the engine bay and on the passenger side remove the scuttle panel cover that is held on with 2 phillips screws
this will expose the pollen filter
remove the cover from that and look to the rear of it and you will find the grommet
pull it out and cut a hole in it
to get the power cable to the battery remove the curved piece of cable trim that goes from that scuttle panel area downwards to the battery
run your power cable through this to the battery but do not connect it yet
pass your power cable through the grommet and then pass the cable through the bulkhead
inside the car pull the cable through as requiredand drop it into the footwell for the time being
now remove the passenger side footwell trim a if it is a 5 door the vertical piece of black trim betwen the 2 doors this just pulls off
when that is removed you will find 2 T20 screws holding the sill trim on either side of the seat belt mounting undo these and then pull off the trim it will be tight but it will no break
some clips may come out but the can be re fitted no problem
if it is a 3 door you will need to remove the rear quarter panel which is fiddly but just unclips
pull the carpet back and you will see there is loads of room in the sill clips for thick cables
be aware though that towards the rear of the rear seat under the carpet in the sill there is a black bar the power  cable will need to be passed under this otherwise the trim will not fit back into place
run the power cable to the rear of the car as required
refitting is a reversal of removing
heres another tip to save having to remove the centre console chop off the clip that you found hidden by the console this means if you want to take out the glove box again it will not be neccessary to remove the centre console aswell
hope this helps

well it is there you obviously did not look properly and it is about 1.5-2" in diameter
it is right up at the top of the bulkhead around 12" from the a pillar on the passenger side

Back when i installed my power cable, i too couldn't find this hole anywhere so ended up just running the cable along the side of the engine & through the door.

this is not recommended as it could rub through the rubber casing short out on the body work and cause a fire
believe me if you look hard enough it is there
if in doubt remove the scuttle panel and the cover over the pollen filter  and look right to the bulkhead in the engine bay and there it will be

Yup, not the most ideal place but got really fed up as firstly i couldn't get the map working & then i couldn't find the hole. I'm very impatient & just wanted to install it.
