I tried an ebay key when I had my Golf, got it cut from locksmith but VW couldnt program it..
did you have the same part number key fob as before? was this for a mk5? i've read different key fobs etc. and you need the same one and one specific to mk5 due to different transponder
how much was locksmith to cut and was it a large chain store?
did VW charge for attempting to code?
Yes mate did lots of reading before I did anything, bought the right key from ebay, locksmith was around a tenner - a small but reputable motor locksmith.
VW spent ages on it!
Its supposed to be a while-you-wait job but after half an hour they came out and said they cant code the key thinking it was due to their software so reverted back to an older version as mine was a 2004 car, so left the car with them. They called in the afternoon and said they cant code the chip...So just charged me 50 quid labour which was fine by me.
Got a refund off the ebay guy and then ordered a new key from VW for 160....when they took the car for coding, i had left the ebay key in the centre console...they programmed the chip of the genuine key but then used the other half the ebay key and then gave me a refund for the cost of that part as it wasnt needed (around 50 i think )...Top, honest service from them!
Hope that helps!
