Have any of you succesfully got a replacement key to work via Ebay purchase:
- to get them cut by a local car key cutter
- and then reprogrammed?

I've head mixed reviews about this. I know mk4 owners have done this relatively easy, but mk5 is slightly different in the reprogramming from what I have read.

Considering this option if some of you can confirm it works this way, as it beats the dealer prices!

I have successfully bought a key and blank blade from ebay, had it cut at a specialist laser key cutter www.nwkeys.co.uk
but I still had to take it to the main dealer to be coded in which cost me approx £50, so it's not a lot cheaper really. This was not for a mk5 Golf, but I imagine it would involve the same process.
I purchased a new key from the dealer for my mk5 which cost me approx £150, but there was no running round to do!

there was a thread on how to recode blank keys. I think it had something to do with open the car with the key that works/second key. Put the blank in the ignition. Turn key so that electrics come on but not start the engine. Get out and lock the car. Or something like that. I tried a search but didn't come up with anything so it might have been on another website. Sorry to tantalise you with a possible solution but I did give a google search a go and everything.

That only codes the remote for central locking IIRC. To start the car, it needs to be coded by VW/vagcom etc to sync the keyfob with the immobiliser.

I'm pretty sure it does involve dealer or vagcom if you have one/know someone with it

Best thing to do is get your dealer to supply and fit imo. Sounds like the DIY route doesn't save you much money, and involves lots of running around.
