crankshaft woodruff key?
« on: 05 June 2009, 21:52 »
Hi i have a problem with my car. about a year ago the woodruff key that stops the crank pully spining around broke up and put the cam timing out. anyway i fixed this by fitting a new crank pully that had the woodruff key built into it (second hand pully), now the car has done about 2500 miles since then and it done the same thing again this morning where the car just got where it would hardly move i pulled the crank pully off and the key had gone again. this time it has killed the end of the crank. i have a new crank but i dont know where to get the pully from vw sold me a woodruff key but there is nowhere for it to sit on my old pully. has any one else had this happen? my poor old car is now dead one week after i got it out again

very very common fail on g60's.

the key is just to locate it the power is transfered by the surface been clamped together.    ether don't undo the bolt or get a new one and torque it to 210mn oiled ( for the na 8 and 16vs )
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Hi its a 16v the pully must of turned on the end of the crank as the timing was out again, i didnt think there was that much strain on the belt to move it as i did it up very tight last time. the engine is now out and waiting for the new bearings to put the other crank in so i take it it will be ok to leave the key out as long as the bolt is done up to 210nm then. im just worried about it happerning again. thanks for the help

it's not ok to leave the key out,  they key needs to be present to make sure everything is in place dureing torqueing and it also helps stop the bolt working loose.

if cam belt pully slip and the whole engine turns into scrap valves meet pistons and make a big mess
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
