Locating boost leaks
« on: 03 June 2009, 21:55 »
Am I right in thinking that it's possible to locate boost leaks using an air compressor and listening for escaping air? If so, which pipe would I be best connecting the compressor to?

Thanks

i believe most people create a plug which fits into the TIP which the air compressor then fits into and pushes air around the system

Cool, I'll give that a go. What sort of pressure should I put through the system to simulate the running pressure of a 1.8T?

not sure - turbo boosts at approx 8-9PSI as standard; 15-17PSI if mapped

The car hasn't been remapped (yet)

I'm getting code 17705 along with the symptoms to go with it. I've checked all of the hoses and can't see anything obvious, but I'm convinced there is a leak. I'm guessing I'll see the pressure drop before it reaches 8-9 PSI.

The pancake pipe? I couldn't see any damaged hoses or anything, but I suppose the joint could be leaking.

Would check this, in fact take it apart and clean up the joint. Mine was leaking there, as it had oil residue that had ran from the leak down the pipe. Remade the joint and the BOOST is back!!

Excellent! Will check this first then as it sounds like a common weak spot.
