Mk 2 speaker question
« on: 07 August 2004, 12:08 »
I want to uprate the speakers in my '86 GTi without chopping holes in an unmolested interior. Can anyone suggest a modern alternative to the two dash speakers? Preferably ones that drop straight in.
Cheers for looking.

Buy later style pockets that have the pull out bit on the front. these are found in mk2s from '88 on. You'll need an adapter to mount a 13cm speaker. you can also mount the tweeters in the original dash positions if needed. You should be able to get these from the scrapper for ?10

Or...

Buy Audioscape pods. these are a direct replacement for the original pockets and allow you to mount a 17cm speaker. I've seen them for around ?60 2nd hand or the asking price new is ?180.

Or...
build your own direct replacement pods with fibreglass like me. materials cost around ?10 and house whatever speaker you want.

Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it. Gonna try the later style door pocket solution.
Cheers

would not bother about getting the newer door pods I did that and had them powered by an amp and the just vibrated the hell out of the door.  You really want to make door pods out of mdf as this will help with the sound or buy some new ones, they are not cheap though.

Hmm, thanks for that. Maybe I'll try and find some higher powered ones for the dash.
I already have a Mk2 parcel shelf with holes in so I won't have to cut this one, so I'm sorted for for the rear. So maybe I'll get away with some small mid-range speakers for the dash. Question now is; What size are the apertures in the dash?
Regards

PRO-PLUS do some that drop straight in as do most manufacturers you just have to get the catalogues out to find them.
I have an amp running a pair of vibe 6x9's in the shelf and have set the head unit bias to provide a fill in soundstage from the front speakers. sounds good enough on a budget.
If you want to do it properly tho, get a good quality component set up, mount the tweeters in the dash and the 6.5's in the doors. With the crossovers supplied set up right, it can and does sound superb, maybe not the loudest but quality audio pleasure.
My mate used an MB Quartz set up....... MMMMMMM nice !
