Looking at the water outlet on the head I would think it is a 1.8

yea thats what the guy said that its a 1.8 outa a mk2, so is that from a GTi i guess? Is there anyway of finding out the engine code to help locate parts etc?

Also it cant do the engine any good being on a slant like that can it? surly the oil is sitting in a wierd place? or is that how they sat in mk2's?

Look for the engine number and you should find a code, t25 had a different sump and oil pump to cope with the slant.

FFS, it's clearly a PB motor, running on K-jet.  The converter will probably have got longer fuel lines fitted, check the condition of these as they're very high pressure.  Everything else motor-wise will be as per Golf2.

It's been fitted on diesel mountings and bellhousing, as it all just bolts up, although depending on the inlet manifold you may find the chassis rail's been beaten up to clearance it around the inlet manifold.

The pump isn't different, there's just a different pick-up fitted to it.  IIRC the GTI oil pump is actually a higher capacity unit than the diesel ones, so let's hope whoever converted it used the original GTI pump with a different pick up.

Be very careful with the sump as it's alloy and they crack very easily.

You've got a better motor there than VW ever fitted to a European T25.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask on www.busgoons.com .

For big brake conversions to make it stop a lot better speak to Dave at www.futbus.com

I hope you enjoy the bus - they're solid motors, the GTI unit suits it well and it will give you a lot of pleasure.

Ok took some new pics, does this help identify the engine code?

There is also a stamp near the sump but its caked in oil so couldn't really make it out and wasn't sure it was anything anyway?

P.S How can you tell the engine code is PB? is that the code i should use when looking for parts for it? i.e exhaust manifold?

cheers for all help so far

the engine code is above the oil filter housing, top of the block between pots 3 and 4.  as said already its most probably a k-jet lump, EV or DX code. you can see the thermoswitch for the 5th injector in the front coolant flange (big 2 pin brown one)

i just want to know so i buy right parts for a service etc.

For the oil, plugs, oil filter, probably dizzi arm and cap tell them it's a PB motor - 8V Golf GTI.  This will get you the right bits to get it serviced.  As it's not possible to see the air filter in the photo, take the element out and compare it at the counter (or in Halfords). There may even be a part number on the side of the one in there.  If you want to do the cap and arm, take them along, too.

Unlike motorbike and jap car stuff, VW bits normally have the part number stamped on them, as you can see from the head.  This is going to be your best bet when ordering service items - replace with the same part number.  If you have the numbers and GSF/Euro Can't Parts are being numpties, call Vee W Services in Bristol - they're ultra helpful and will normally be happy to ship out a complete service kit, going on parts numbers.
