coilovers
« on: 03 May 2009, 17:40 »
just joined today after looking on hear for the past two weeks but cant find any info on coilovers, what i want to know is are the cheap ones any good,i want my car as low as pos but i also drive fast and hard on road so it needs to take the bumps as well.i dont mind a hard ride but i want them to last and not brake after a year or so,my car is a e reg gti 8v with big bumpers 17"wheels and has been lowered but by how much i dont know(the back is lower then the front)on roundabouts the front scrub a bit and on big bumps the rear scrub so i know i will need the arches rolled(any one know ware i can get this done in or around bradford on avon)and im thinking of fitting polybushes all round(have read that some of you dont like them but when i fitted them to my r19 16v they made it feel a lot better and it feels like the golf has started to move around abit on the bushes and they will last longer and be easy to fit)will get some pics up when i can.only had the car two weeks and all ive done is clean it,put my old wheels on,light spoiler and a gear linkage kit.
drive it like u stole it,brake it then mod it

I'm on a budget and dont have lots off money like a lot of you have,if that makes me a bad person then so what.this is y i like offroading more then smart cars as they are more friendly and more polite and helpful.all i wanted was some advice as you can buy cheap coilovers on hear for about £180 and if they are that sh:t then y sell them on hear.(a mate did say that most vw,audi and seat forums are stuck up but thought i would give it a go so would someone come along and prove him wrong) and some help would be nice as there seems a lot of you brought the coilovers I'm on about

Cheap coilovers arent worth the money unless your happy to put up with a terrible ride and never going down bumpy roads along with some dubious weather protection. From experience, stay away from FK Highsports, they are shockingly bad and dont consider coilovers unless you have a spare £500 knocking about (IMO).

if was you i would buy a weitec ultra gt kit, they do various different ride heights and are really really good value for money plus they are 100% better than cheap coilovers.

thanx for the reply, what make should i be looking at around £500 and how low can i go and still have good cornering,i know thy say -40 is the best for handling but would -60 or -70 make it that much more difference as i love the way it just sticks to the road but i want better looks.i need to find a compromise between looks and handling as i like the euro look but cant see that if i went all out euro it would handle right

well i rate weitec very highly, remember they are a division of kw so the quality is superb, i've personally never had a mk2 lowered 70mm but i would imagine it would be an absolute nightmare to live with, i have however had a mk2 lowered 60mm and it was alright but my current golf lowered 40mm runs rings around it. Bilstein and koni are also very good but can get quite expensive. a weitec kit at 40mm is only about £330 and i dont think the 60mm is much more.

Welcome to the site. Weitec are great value for money. Also Supersport are ok for the purpose.

Please forgive Sharpie he is our special needs poster but can sometimes be funny.

Best thing you can do to improve you're handling and lower you car is ditch the 17's for 14/15's. MkII's feel so much better with smaller wheels and IMO look alot better. They also excelerate faster, tyres are cheaper and you can drop it further on your coilovers when you get them fitted. I know this because I had 17's on my MKII when I bought it and the best mod I've done so far is fitting the BBS RM's. Welcome to the site there is alot of good people on here so don't get to impaient it is a bank hol you no!
03 210 Seat LCR. Badger5 V2.2TIP, Fordge 007p, Wellycooler, Quaife ATB LSD, Nuespeed ARB's, KW Clubsports, 330mm discs, 3" turbo back de cat and still on the standard map!
