Problems with MK5 GTI after re-map
« on: 01 May 2009, 16:12 »
Hello chaps,

I've started experiencing some problems with my golf. Bare with me here. I had my car re-mapped just under a week ago.

The car has been running very well for the past week, but on wednesday, the car suddenly went into a bit of a lull. I called my re-mapping guy, who plugged the vag com software into the car and showed me a fault code, indicating the car was losing boost pressure! I had the pipe work checked out and it's all clean. I dropped the car off with vw yesterdaymorning, who claim the car isn't showing a fault code. The Car accelerates and pulls through the revs smoothly, but that push just isn't there. The turbo whistle sounds more prolonged than before - but there is no smoke from the exhausts.

VW have said they can't act, unless they have have a fault code. Understandable. And have asked me to drive it over the weekend and see if i can re-generate the fault code. My mapping guy is coming around today to up load the original map again, to see if we can feel the difference on stock mode. If it is a turbo problem, this should be evident straight off. There's definitely something not right.

What should i do? I've very reluctant to blame the map, but it seems the extra power has pushed the golf over the edge. What if i cannot re generate the fault code? Will VW totally ignore me until something is shown up on their system? Some chaps from another forum have pointed the finger towards the dump valve. The car is totally stock, excluding the remap, of course.

Have any of you ever had a problem after a re-map?

Hi, It sounds like your Cut off Valve (also known as diverter valve). I've just replaced my second one. VW have brought out a new revision which does away with the diaphragm and uses a sealing washer instead.
Get the garage to take it off, the chances are there will be a split in it.

Part No: 06H 145 710 D. This is the latest revision.

I too subscribe to the torn DV theory but would have been happier if you could have also included the vcds fault code in your posting.
Without traction power is nothing!

When mine went pop I had no fault code but could easily tell when hooked up to vcds by the big difference actual and requested boost.

However, I did get a fault code when I put the 1st replacement in. This was due to the head of the valve not being located in the ball joint properly but it made no difference to performance. The fault code disappeared when I seated it properly into the ball joint.

Some pics of the new valve if anyone's interested.

Thanks guys. So basically, it's a problem with the diverter valve?

Most probably a torn diverter valve. Are you able to remove it yourself and check if the diaphragm is okay?

Nah, I'm not very good with car engines. So which divert valve should I replace it with? an OEM part or something from Forge Motorsport?

both the latest diaphram version G and the new piston type version D are bullet proof on stage 2 so i would stick with oem.

Bear in mind, version D is not designed for the gti so will flag on the vag system as an incorrect part fitted.  I'd stick with version G, £35 and 30 mins labour so a cheapish fix

I thought the G revision was going to be bullet proof. For me unfortunately not. It did last 20k miles though. My C revision lasted only 8kmiles.
The D Revision does not thow up any errors (on my car with vcds anyway)
When I got home after purchasing the D Revision valve I opened the box and thought they had given me the incorrect part. I went back to the VW dealer insisting they had given me the wrong part. They told me it was the correct part, the G revision was now obsolete and this was the replacement.
Why do you say the D rev is not designed for the Gti?

My D works perfectly and has never thrown up any vag-com errors.
